JELD-WEN sliders are everywhere in the Twin Cities: the vinyl units on the rack at Home Depot and Lowe's, the clad-wood and steel units from a lumberyard millwork desk. The store will sell you one and deliver it, and then the install is your problem. We are an independent installer. We are not a JELD-WEN dealer, we do not sell the door, and questions about the product itself go back to the store. What we do is install patio doors, and a JELD-WEN slider in the wrap is a normal Tuesday.
A sliding door is a window that people walk through, and it fails at the bottom. The sill sits at floor level, collects rain and melt, and if there is no pan under it the subfloor rots quietly for years. So the order of work is fixed: old door out, subfloor checked, sill pan formed, frame set dead level so the panel rolls without drifting, fin nailed and taped, foam, trim. The panels and screen go in last and get adjusted at the rollers until the latch lines up.
Two things to get right before it ships: the handing (which panel slides, seen from outside) and the rough opening size, especially the height, because a patio door frame does not shim up the way a window does. Send a photo of your old slider from inside and out with a tape on it and we check both.

- Interior casing profile if it should match the rest of the room
- Exterior trim or siding pieces if the new frame is a different size than the old one

- Two people to carry the unit in and set it, plus removal and haul-away of the old door
- Sill pan, flashing tape, shims, low-expansion foam, backer rod and exterior sealant
- Subfloor and framing repair at the sill when we find rot, quoted first
- Siding cut back and refit, or new exterior trim, around the fin
- Interior jamb extensions and casing to close up the inside
- Roller, latch and screen adjustment so the panel glides and locks
- Photos of the finished door in your job folder
- Painting the new casing as its own line, or leave it primed and paint it yourself

- Whether the rough opening has to be reframed for a different size door
- Interior finish: casing and jamb extensions vs. a drywall return

Situations and options
Vinyl sliders from Home Depot or Lowe's
The stock two-panel units in the common widths and heights. Nailing fin outside, welded vinyl frame, screen included. Set level on a pan, fin taped, foamed and cased. The most common JELD-WEN door we install.
Clad-wood and steel patio doors
Lumberyard units with an aluminum-clad exterior and wood interior, or steel frames. Heavier, usually delivered by truck. Same pan and flashing, then the wood interior is finished with casing and stain or paint as its own line.
Three-panel and wide units
A slider with a fixed center and two operating panels, or one wide fixed panel and one slider. They need a level sill across the whole width or the panels drift, and a rough opening check before the order is placed.

Plenty of homeowners buy the slider and the vinyl windows at the same time. We set both in one trip, priced per window on top of the door, and the second unit is always cheaper than the first.

How do I know which way a JELD-WEN slider should open?
Stand outside looking at the door. The handing describes which panel moves and which side it is on from that view. Most people keep the same handing as the old slider so the furniture and the light switch still make sense. The box and the order line say the handing; if you send us a photo of your old door from the outside we tell you what to order, no charge.
Does a JELD-WEN patio door need a sill pan?
Yes, every sliding door does. The sill sits at floor level and water gets under it from rain, melt off the deck and condensation. A pan, either a preformed one or a sloped pan built from flashing tape, catches that water and sends it back outside instead of into the subfloor. The pan is not in the box; we bring it, and we will not set a patio door without one.
Can you install a JELD-WEN slider where my old wood patio door was?
Yes, and it is the most common swap we do. Old wood sliders from the seventies and eighties are usually rotted at the sill and the bottom of the jambs, so plan on some framing repair, which we quote from photos before we start. The new vinyl or clad unit is often a slightly different size than the old frame, so we measure the rough opening, not the old door, before you order.
Do you also install JELD-WEN windows labor only?
Yes. The vinyl windows sold next to the sliders at Home Depot and Lowe's install the same way: fin nailed and taped over a pan, foamed, trimmed inside. We price them per window and usually set three to five in a day. If you bought the windows and the slider together, one visit handles both.
What should I check when the JELD-WEN door is delivered?
Before the driver leaves, look for a cracked or bowed frame, a chipped glass edge and the screen panel in the box. Check the label for the width, height and handing you ordered. Keep the unit upright, leaning against a wall, out of the sun, with the wrap on. On install day we open it and check it again before the old door comes out, so a damaged unit never leaves a hole in the wall.
