Double Interior Doors for a Home Office — A Pair That Closes for Calls

The front room is now the office and it has a cased opening with no door, or a single door that leaves a dark box.

Double interior doors for a home office are a hinged pair hung between the office and the rest of the house, chosen to look open when parked and seal out noise when shut for a call. JMB Builders supplies the pair — solid core, glass or solid panels — hangs it in the existing opening or widens the opening for it, and fits the catch and bolts, across the Twin Cities metro. Priced per opening, reply within one business day.

  • Priced per opening, door pair supplied
  • Solid core for quiet, glass or solid panels
  • Existing opening or widened for a pair

A lot of Twin Cities houses have a front room off the entry that was a formal living or dining room and is now where someone works. It usually has a wide cased opening with no door, or a single door that makes the room feel cut off. A pair of hinged doors solves both: open, the room reads as part of the house; closed, a call happens without the kitchen in the background. The right pair depends on how much noise you need to stop and how much light you want to keep.

For noise, solid core doors with a tight meeting edge do most of the work. A pair always leaks more sound than a single door because of the gap between the leaves, so the astragal or the T-shaped meeting stile matters, and the doors should close against a stop with a smooth sweep at the floor. For light, glass panels — clear, frosted or reeded — keep the room from being a box. Many offices end up with frosted glass in solid-core frames, which gets both.

The opening decides the scope. A cased opening already wide enough takes a prehung pair with a new jamb. A single door opening has to be widened: the header checked or replaced, a new jamb stud, drywall patched. We supply the pairs, options such as Masonite, Jeld-Wen and Trimlite, hang them with a ball catch or flush bolts on the inactive leaf, and quote painting as its own line.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • What the room is for: video calls, phone work, a quiet study, or just a tidy way to close off the mess
  • Solid panels, glass panels or a mix, and the door style to match the rest of the house
  • Which leaf is the active door and whether the inactive leaf gets flush bolts or a ball catch
  • Paint color for the doors and casing — quoted as its own line, or paint them yourself

What JMB supplies

  • A prehung pair sized to the opening with the correct handing, solid core where you want quiet
  • Widening of a single door opening to take a pair, with the header checked and drywall patched
  • Removal and haul-away of the old door or the cased-opening trim
  • Jambs shimmed plumb; meeting edges fitted so the pair closes tight with even margins
  • Astragal or T-stile at the meeting edge, ball catch or flush bolts on the inactive leaf, hardware fitted
  • New casing in your profile or a flat profile to match a modern office
  • Painting of the doors and casing when you want it, quoted as a separate line
  • Photos of the finished pair in your job folder

How it is priced: per opening

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Existing wide opening vs widening a single door opening, and whether that wall is bearing
  • Solid core vs hollow core, and solid panels vs glass lites
  • Door style and whether it matches an existing profile in the house
  • Hardware: dummy lever with ball catch, passage lever with flush bolts, or a locking set
  • Casing: reusing your profile vs new flat casing on the new jamb
  • Drywall patching and texture match where the opening was widened
  • Painting the doors and casing, quoted as a separate line

Send a photo of the opening from the hall and one from inside the office, with a rough width and height. Tell us if a call quality problem or a visual one is driving the job.

How long it takes

A prehung pair in an existing wide opening: about half a day. Widening a single opening for a pair: a day plus a return trip for drywall finish. Pairs are ordered after the quote is approved.

Situations and options

Solid core, solid panel pair

The quietest choice. Two heavy flat or Shaker-panel doors with a tight meeting stile and a sweep at the floor. For calls and recording. The room is dark when closed, so it suits an office with its own window.

Frosted glass pair in solid core frames

Solid core stiles and rails around frosted or reeded tempered glass. Light passes both ways, the screen is a blur from the hall, and the mass of the frame still cuts most of the noise. The most common office pair.

Clear glass pair

Full or divided clear lites in a hinged pair. The room stays visually open and bright when closed. Less privacy and a bit more sound; right for a study or a shared office where the point is closing off noise from the kitchen, not hiding the screen.

Pair on a widened opening

A single door opening cut wider to take two leaves. The header is checked and replaced if needed, the wall patched. Lets a bedroom-turned-office open onto the hall instead of hiding behind a single door.

Double Interior Doors for a Home Office — A Pair That Closes for Calls: questions, answered

Do double doors block sound as well as a single door?

Not quite, because the gap where the two leaves meet is a sound path a single door does not have. Solid core doors close most of that gap's effect, and a proper astragal or T-shaped meeting stile with weatherstrip-style seals closes more of it. For a home office doing calls, a solid core pair with a good meeting edge is quiet enough; for recording, a single solid door with seals is still the better tool.

Can you put double doors where there is a single door now?

Yes. The opening is widened: the drywall comes off, the header is checked and replaced if the span calls for it, a new jamb stud goes in, and the wall is patched. On a non-bearing wall it is a day's framing. On a bearing wall the header is sized by an engineer first. Then the prehung pair is hung the same as in any wide opening.

What hardware do double interior doors use?

The common setup is one active leaf with a lever and latch, and an inactive leaf held shut by a ball catch at the top or flush bolts at the top and bottom. Dummy levers on the inactive side keep the look matched. For a locking office, a privacy or keyed lever on the active leaf and flush bolts on the inactive one. We fit whichever you pick and set the strike so the pair closes flush.

Should home office double doors have glass?

Usually some. A closed solid pair makes a front room dark unless it has its own window. Frosted or reeded glass lets light through both ways and blurs the screen from the hall, and in a solid core frame it still cuts most of the noise. Clear glass keeps the room open but shows everything. Think about where the camera points before you pick.

Are home office double doors the same as interior French doors?

A glass pair is what most people call interior French doors. The difference on an office is the choices: solid core instead of hollow, frosted or reeded instead of clear, and a tight meeting stile with flush bolts instead of a loose ball catch. Same opening and same hanging method, tuned for quiet. Our interior French doors page covers the pair in general; this one is the office setup.

How wide does an opening need to be for double doors?

Wide enough for two leaves plus the jamb. Pairs come in a range of combined widths, so most cased openings and widened single openings can take a stock pair. We measure the rough opening and match a pair to it, or set the new opening width to a stock pair when we are widening. Odd widths can be made up with a custom pair or a wider jamb leg.
