Most interior doors in houses built since the seventies are hollow core: two thin hardboard or wood veneer skins over a cardboard honeycomb. They weigh almost nothing and they stop almost no sound. A solid core door is dense particleboard, MDF or stave lumber all the way through, three or four times the weight, and it blocks conversation, TV and hallway noise the way a wall does. Same look, same sizes, same hardware.
The door alone is half the fix. Sound also goes around it: under the door, at the latch side where the door does not quite meet the stop, and at the hinge side gap. For a room that has to be quiet, the solid core slab gets a perimeter seal on the stop, an adjustable sweep or an automatic door bottom, and a strike set so the door pulls tight against the seal. That combination is what makes the difference between a heavier door and a quiet room.

Slabs are fitted to your existing jambs, with hinges mortised deeper for the weight, or new prehung solid core units go in where the jamb is not worth keeping. New doors go in primed. Situations and options
Slab swap into the existing jamb
The most common job. The existing jamb and casing stay. A solid core slab in the same size and style is mortised to match the old hinge locations, bored for the lockset, beveled and hung. Nothing else in the room changes.
Prehung solid core unit
When the jamb is beat up or the door is an odd size, a new prehung solid core unit replaces the whole thing. The heavier door comes on a jamb with three hinges already set, and it is cased to match the house.
Perimeter seal and door bottom
Kerf-in or surface-mount seal on the stop, an adjustable sweep or an automatic door bottom that drops when the door closes, and the strike set so the door pulls tight. Adds to any door and makes the biggest difference on a nursery or office door.
Whole-floor bedroom package
Every bedroom and bathroom door on a floor swapped at once, with the seals on the rooms that need them. Doors are ordered in matching style, hung in one or two days, and hauled away in a load.

Do solid core doors actually reduce noise?
Yes, clearly. A hollow core door is a thin skin over cardboard and transmits sound almost like an open doorway. A solid core door is dense all the way through and blocks normal conversation, a TV in the next room and hallway traffic. It will not make a room silent, because sound still passes under and around the door and through the wall, but with seals and a sweep added it is the single biggest improvement a bedroom or office door can get.
Can a solid core door go on my existing hinges and jamb?
Usually. The slab is ordered in the same size and mortised to match your hinge locations, so the jamb is untouched. The extra weight is the only concern: two light hinges on a jamb nailed to the framing may sag over time, so we often add a third hinge and drive long screws through the top hinge into the stud. A jamb that is already loose or split gets replaced with a prehung unit.
What seals make a bedroom door quieter?
Three things. A perimeter seal on the door stop, either pressed into a kerf or a surface-mounted strip, closes the gap at the head and both sides. A sweep or an automatic door bottom closes the gap at the floor. The strike is set so the door compresses the seal when it latches. Without all three, sound goes around the door no matter how heavy it is.
Will a solid core door match my other doors?
Yes. Solid core doors are made in the same flush and panel styles as hollow core doors, in the same sizes, so a six-panel hollow core door is replaced with a six-panel solid core door and nobody can tell from the hall. They come primed. Painting is quoted as a separate line, or leave them primed and paint them yourself.
Should I replace every door or just the bedrooms?
Start with the doors on the rooms that need to be quiet: bedrooms, a nursery, a home office, the bathroom next to the living room. Closet and pantry doors do not need it. Most people do a floor at a time because the doors are ordered together and hung in one visit, and the per-door price is better than doing them one at a time.
Is a solid core door the same as a fire door?
No. Some solid core doors carry a fire rating, but a standard solid core door is a sound and feel upgrade, not a rated assembly. The door between the house and an attached garage has its own rules and its own page. For a bedroom or office, an unrated solid core door is the right part.
