A mudroom built-in is trim carpentry with a floor plan. The wall between the garage door and the kitchen is a fixed width, the outlet is where it is, the base heat register is in the way, and the bench has to be a height a kid can sit on and an adult can pull boots off from. A store-bought locker unit ignores all of that. A site-built one is designed around it.
We build it in the room from MDF panels and poplar face frames: a bench box with a shoe shelf underneath, vertical dividers to make lockers, a row of cubbies across the top, a hook rail at coat height, and a top cap. Beadboard or shiplap on the back is common. Every edge that meets a wall or the floor is scribed so there is no gap to caulk, and the whole thing is screwed to the studs so it does not move when someone sits hard.
It goes in paint-grade, filled, sanded and primed. Painting is quoted as a separate line, or paint it yourself. Bench tops take a beating, so we make the seat from a solid poplar or maple panel, or MDF if you would rather; stained oak tops on a painted base are a common look. Hooks, baskets and bench cushions are yours to pick.

Situations and options
Bench with hooks and cubbies
The standard: a bench box with a shoe shelf, a beadboard back, a hook rail, and a row of cubbies above. Open lockers made with dividers between the hooks.
Full-height lockers
Individual lockers with a shelf, a hook, and an optional door, so each person's coat and bag are out of sight. A bench can run across the front or sit beside them.
Small entry bench
A bench with a shoe shelf and a hook rail for a narrow spot beside the door where lockers will not fit. Same construction, smaller footprint.
Stained top on a painted base
A solid oak or maple bench top, stained, on a painted MDF and poplar unit. The top takes the boots; the paint takes the rest.

How much does a built-in mudroom bench cost?
We price it per project from the width of the wall, the number of lockers, and what is in the unit: shoe shelf, cubbies, beadboard back, doors, a solid bench top. A photo with a tape measure across the wall and a note on how many lockers you want is enough to sketch it and give you a firm number. There are no prices on this site; the quote comes from your photos within one business day.
What do you build mudroom lockers out of?
MDF panels for the boxes, dividers and backs, with poplar face frames and trim, because that combination paints smooth and stays flat. Bench tops are solid poplar or maple so they hold up to boots. If you want a stained unit we build it in oak or maple plywood with matching solid edges. Everything is screwed to the studs and scribed to the wall.
How tall should a mudroom bench be?
About the height of a chair seat, a little lower if it is mainly for kids. The shoe shelf under it is open so wet boots can dry. Hooks go at a height an adult can reach and lower hooks can be added for kids. Cubbies above are set high enough to keep a hat or bag off the coats. We draw it for your household before we cut.
Can you build lockers with doors?
Yes. Full-height lockers get a door each so coats and bags are out of sight, with a shelf and a hook inside. Doors are paint-grade shaker or flat panel on concealed hinges. Open lockers with a divider and a hook rail are simpler and cheaper and are what most families end up using.
Do you paint the mudroom built-in?
Yes, when you want us to. It goes in primed, with nail holes filled and sanded, and painting is quoted as its own line on the estimate; or leave it primed and paint it yourself. Built-ins get a lot of wear, so we recommend a hard enamel on the paint side and a durable clear coat on a stained top.
Can the bench go around an outlet or heat register?
Yes, that is why it is built on site. We leave the register open with a grille in the toe kick or the bench front, box around an outlet or move it with an electrician, and scribe around anything that cannot move. The unit ends up looking like it was built with the house.
