Most closets in the metro have one of two things in them: a wire shelf hung on drywall clips that is pulling loose, or a single builder-grade shelf and rod that sags in the middle. Both waste half the closet. A wood shelf-and-rod system built to the closet fixes the sag, doubles the hanging space with a double-hang section, and puts shelves where you actually reach.
We build it in place. A cleat screwed into the studs along the back and side walls carries the shelf, so the weight goes into framing and not into drywall anchors. The rod hangs in brackets at the ends and at mid-span so it holds a full run of coats without bowing. The shelf is scribed to the walls, which in most houses are not square, so there is no gap and no caulk.
Material is your call. Painted wood, poplar and MDF, filled and primed, is what we do most and it takes paint like the rest of the trim. White melamine is cheaper, goes in finished, and is fine in a kid's closet or a rental. Stain-grade oak or maple for a walk-in you want to show off.

Shelf and rod
One shelf on cleats with a rod under it, the full width of the closet. The right answer for coat closets and long-hang sections.
Double hang
Two rods, one above the other, for shirts and pants, with a shelf above. It doubles the hanging space in a reach-in closet without changing the closet.
Linen and pantry shelves
Deep fixed shelves on cleats, spaced for towels or cans, scribed to the walls. Painted wood or melamine.
Walk-in with towers and shoe shelves
A center tower with adjustable shelves, hanging sections on both sides, a shoe rack at the bottom. Laid out from your list of what goes in it.

Can you replace wire closet shelving with wood?
Yes, and it is the most common closet call we get. We take the wire shelving and the clips out, patch the holes, then install wood shelf and rod on cleats screwed into the studs. The new shelving holds more weight, does not leave lines on folded clothes, and can be painted to match the trim. Same-day for a reach-in closet.
How is a wood closet shelf attached to the wall?
On a cleat: a strip of wood screwed through the drywall into every stud along the back wall and both side walls. The shelf sits on the cleats and is fastened down. The weight goes into the framing, not into drywall anchors, which is why a cleat-mounted shelf holds a full load of sweaters where a clip-mounted wire shelf pulls loose.
What is double hang in a closet?
Two closet rods, one above the other, in the same section. The top rod holds shirts and jackets, the bottom rod holds pants folded over a hanger or skirts. A shelf sits above the top rod. In a reach-in closet it roughly doubles the hanging space, and it is usually paired with a single long-hang section beside it for dresses and coats.
How do you keep a closet rod from sagging?
Support it in the middle. A rod on end brackets alone bows under a full run of coats. We put a center support bracket down from the shelf every few feet, use a rod sized for the span, and mount the end brackets into the cleat or the studs. A rod supported that way stays straight no matter how full the closet gets.
Should closet shelves be melamine or painted wood?
Painted wood, poplar and MDF, looks like part of the house, takes paint like the trim, and is what we use in most bedroom closets. White melamine goes in finished, costs less, and is fine in a kid's closet, a pantry or a rental where nobody is going to paint. Stained oak or maple is for a walk-in you want to show. All three go on cleats into studs the same way.
Do you install closet systems from a store like IKEA or Container Store?
We build shelving on site from wood or melamine rather than assembling store kits, because a built-in fits the closet and holds better. If you already bought a system, send a photo and we will tell you whether installing it is something we can do well or whether it makes more sense to build.
