Fireplace mantel installation is mostly about what is behind the mantel. A mantel carries stockings, a TV bracket, a row of framed photos and, once in a while, a kid who climbs it. The common failure is a heavy beam or shelf held on with drywall anchors or a couple of screws into a stud, which sags and then lets go. The second failure is a wood mantel set too close to the firebox, which scorches, or fails inspection, or both.
We start with the fireplace. Every gas insert, wood-burning unit and factory fireplace has a required clearance from the firebox opening to combustible trim, and the code has its own rule on top of that. We measure the opening, check what the manufacturer calls for, and set the mantel height and depth so the clearance is met. Then we get into the wall: solid blocking between the studs, or a steel plate on stone and brick, so the mantel hangs on something that does not move.
From there it is trim work. A floating shelf slides onto rods or a French cleat. A full surround gets legs, a header and a shelf built in place, with the returns and reveals matched to the room's casing. Paint-grade in poplar and MDF, or stained in oak, maple, walnut or a reclaimed beam you bring us.

Floating mantel shelf
A solid or box-built shelf that hangs on a French cleat or rods set into blocking, with no visible brackets. The clean look over stone, tile or a plain drywall fireplace.
Legs, header and shelf surround
The traditional mantel: two legs, a header across the top and a shelf, built in place and returned to the wall. Matches the casing profile in the room or sets a new one.
Mantel on stone or brick
Anchored with a steel plate and masonry anchors, scribed to the face of the stone so there is no gap. A reclaimed beam looks best here.
Full built-in wall
Surround plus bookcases or cabinets on both sides, a TV niche above, and crown that ties it together. Built on site from MDF and poplar, paint-grade.

How far does a wood mantel have to be from the fireplace opening?
It depends on the fireplace. Every gas insert and factory-built fireplace lists a required clearance from the opening to combustible trim in its installation manual, and the code has a general rule for masonry fireplaces that increases the clearance as the mantel projects further from the wall. We check the manufacturer's number and the code before we set the height and depth, and we hold whichever one is larger. A mantel set closer than that can scorch and will fail an inspection.
How do you attach a floating mantel so it holds weight?
Into framing, never just drywall. We open the wall behind the mantel line, install solid blocking between the studs, patch it, and mount a French cleat or threaded rods to the blocking. The mantel slides on and is fastened from underneath. On stone or brick we anchor a steel plate to the masonry and hang the mantel on it. Either way it holds a TV bracket and whatever gets hung from it in December.
Can you install a mantel on a stone or brick fireplace?
Yes. Masonry takes a different mounting: a steel plate or threaded rods set in masonry anchors, then the mantel hung on that. The back of the mantel is scribed to the face of the stone so the fit is tight without a bead of caulk. A reclaimed beam or a thick solid shelf is the usual choice on stone.
Do you build the mantel or do I buy one?
Either. We build floating shelves and full surrounds on site in paint-grade poplar and MDF or in stain-grade hardwood, matched to the room's trim. If you already bought a beam or a mantel kit, we install it with the blocking and clearance done right. Send a photo of what you have or describe what you want and the quote covers both.
Can the mantel be built to hold a TV?
Yes, but the TV should mount to the wall through the mantel or above it, not to the shelf itself. We plan the blocking so the TV bracket lands on framing, run a chase for the cables behind the surround if you want, and set the mantel height so the TV sits at a usable level. Tell us the TV size when you send the photos.
What is included in a fireplace surround?
Two legs, a header across the top and a mantel shelf, built and installed in place with returns to the wall, plus the blocking behind it and the clearance check. It is trimmed to match the casing in the room or built as its own profile. Bookcases or cabinets on either side make it a full built-in wall, which we quote as a separate line.
