Floating shelves installation is about what is inside the wall and inside the shelf. A floating shelf has no visible support, so all the support is inside it. Two ways to do that. A concealed bracket: a steel plate with rods that screws to the wall, and the shelf, drilled or built hollow, slides over the rods. Or a cleat: a strip of wood screwed to the wall, and a hollow box shelf that slips over it and is fastened from the top or the bottom. Either one holds only as well as what it is screwed into, and that has to be studs.
Studs are not always where the shelf wants them. A short shelf between two studs, or a shelf that has to line up with a mantel or a cabinet, may land where there is only drywall. We open the wall, add blocking between the studs, patch it, and mount the bracket to the block. It is an extra hour and it is the difference between a shelf that stays level for years and one that droops by spring.
The shelf itself matters as much. A solid slab of hardwood is heavy and needs a bracket rated for it and rods drilled deep and straight. A hollow shelf we build, a box of plywood or MDF with a hardwood or paint-grade face, is lighter, can be any length, and slides over a cleat with no drilling. In an alcove, beside a fireplace or between two walls, the shelf is scribed to both walls so there is no gap and no bracket ever shows.

Shelves in a recess or on either side of a fireplace, scribed to both side walls, lined up with each other and with the mantel. No end of a bracket ever shows.

How do you install floating shelves into studs?
Find the studs, lay the shelf out so the bracket lands on at least two of them, and screw the bracket through the drywall into the framing with structural screws. Where the layout does not hit enough studs, we open the drywall and add blocking between them, patch it, and mount to that. Then the shelf slides over the bracket rods or the cleat and is fastened. Drywall anchors alone are what make floating shelves fail.
What is the difference between a concealed bracket and a cleat?
A concealed bracket is a steel plate with rods sticking out; the shelf is drilled or built hollow to slide over the rods. It works with solid wood shelves. A cleat is a strip of wood screwed to the wall, and a hollow box shelf slips over it and is screwed from above or below. Cleats suit shelves we build and long alcove shelves. Both hold as much as the fasteners in the studs allow.
Can floating shelves hold heavy books?
Yes, if they are built and mounted for it. A shelf full of books wants a steel bracket rated for the weight, rods that reach most of the way to the front of the shelf, screws into every stud along the run, and blocking added where the studs are too far apart. The shelf itself should be thick enough to hide the rods without being weak at the front edge. Tell us it is for books and we build it that way.
Can you build custom floating shelves to a length?
Yes. We build hollow box shelves from plywood or MDF with a paint-grade or hardwood face, in whatever length and depth the wall wants, including odd lengths for alcoves. They are lighter than a solid slab, so they hold more on the same bracket. Finishing is quoted as a separate line — or leave them primed and paint them yourself.
Can floating shelves go on either side of a fireplace?
Yes, and it is one of the most common places for them. The shelves are scribed to the side wall and the fireplace wall so no bracket end shows, and lined up with the mantel and with each other. Where the wall is brick or stone, the bracket goes in with masonry anchors. Keep wood shelves at the clearance the fireplace calls for; we check that before we drill.
Will you install floating shelves I bought online?
Yes. Send the listing so we can see the bracket. Most come with a decent bracket and terrible anchors; we mount the bracket into studs or blocking and throw the anchors away. Solid wood shelves that need to be drilled for a rod bracket are drilled on a jig so the holes are straight and the shelf sits flat.
