A standard reach-in closet has most of what a small office needs: a back wall for a desk, side walls for shelves and a doorway that can close it off. What it lacks is a finished look. Bifold or sliding doors, a narrow opening with the header in the way, rough drywall inside, and no outlet.
The conversion starts at the opening. Doors and tracks come off. If the opening is narrower than the closet, the wall can be reframed wider so the desk is usable end to end. The opening gets cased like a room doorway, and the inside walls are patched and painted.
Then the desk: a top that runs wall to wall on cleats, at desk height, with a grommet for cords. Shelves above on standards or cleats. Lighting and power are planned before the drywall is patched, and any new outlet or light is wired by a licensed electrician. If you want the closet back later, the rod and shelf can go back in.

Can you convert a reach-in closet into a home office?
Yes. The doors come off, the opening is cased or widened, and a desk top goes in wall to wall with shelves above. Most reach-in closets are deep enough for a laptop or a monitor on a desk top.
Is a closet deep enough for a desk?
Most reach-in closets are about the depth of a standard desk. A shallow closet still works for a laptop and a slim monitor. Send the depth and we tell you what fits.
Does the closet opening need to be wider for a desk?
Only if the opening is much narrower than the closet and you cannot reach the ends of the desk. In that case the wall is reframed wider with a new header, and the drywall is patched and cased.
How do you get power into a closet office?
If the closet has no outlet, one is added by a licensed electrician before the desk goes in. We plan it with the desk so the outlet lands above the top, and add a grommet for cords.
Does a closet office make the bedroom no longer a bedroom?
Some appraisers and buyers look for a closet in a bedroom. The conversion can be undone: we can leave the cleats so the rod and shelf go back in. Ask your realtor if you plan to sell soon.
Can you build drawers or cabinets into the closet office?
Yes. A small base cabinet or file drawer can sit under one end of the desk. Cabinets or doors above can replace open shelves. It is priced by the pieces added.
