Closet openings get left behind more than any other doorway. The door package did not include them, the drywaller wrapped the opening with corner bead because nobody told him a jamb was coming, or the closet doors were ordered late. What is left is a rough opening with drywall or bare framing on the sides and a header with no stop. Finishing it means building a jamb, two legs and a head ripped to the wall thickness, setting it plumb and square, then casing it on both faces.
The door type sets the jamb. Bifolds need a head jamb for the track and a jamb width that clears the door when it folds. Bypass doors need a header wide enough for the double track and a fascia to hide it. A prehung swing door brings its own jamb and just needs the opening sized right. An open closet, or a reach-in that will get a curtain, is a cased opening with no stop. We check the rough opening against the door you bought before we cut anything. Painting is quoted as a separate line, or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

Situations and options
Bifold closet
A head jamb and two side jambs, the bifold track screwed to the head, pivots and the floor bracket set, and the doors hung and adjusted so they meet in the middle. Casing on both sides.
Bypass closet
A head jamb wide enough for the double track, a fascia board to hide the track from the room, floor guides, and the two doors hung so they slide past each other without rubbing.
Prehung swing door
A standard prehung interior door set in the opening, shimmed at the hinges and strike, cased both sides. Used on walk-in closets and wherever a swing door fits the room.
Open cased closet
A jamb with no stop and casing on both faces, for a closet that stays open, gets a curtain, or is being turned into a nook. The head jamb is finished clean because there is no track to cover it.

The drywaller wrapped my closet opening — can you still put a jamb and casing on it?
Yes. We cut the corner bead and drywall back to the framing on the sides and head, set a wood jamb ripped to the wall thickness, and case both faces. The cut edge of the drywall ends up behind the casing so nothing shows. It takes a little longer than a bare opening but it is the same result.
Do I need a jamb for bifold closet doors?
Yes. The bifold track screws to a head jamb, the pivot bracket sits at the bottom of a side jamb, and the doors close against the jamb faces. Without a jamb the track goes into bare framing and the doors bang on drywall. Some builders skip it on budget homes; it looks unfinished and the doors do not last.
Can you case a closet opening that will not have a door?
Yes. A jamb with no stop and casing on both sides finishes the opening as a clean cased pass-through. It is a common choice for a nursery closet that gets a curtain, a coat closet turned into a bench nook, or a reach-in that stays open. If you add a door later, the jamb is already there.
What size closet door do I buy for my opening?
Measure the rough opening, the framing to framing width and the floor to header height, before you buy. Bifold and bypass door packages list the finished opening they fit, and the jamb takes up some of the rough opening on each side. Send us a photo with a tape across the opening and the door you are looking at, and we will tell you whether it fits before you order.
Can you match the casing on the other doors in the room?
Yes. Send a close-up of the existing casing and we match the profile from stock, or find the closest and tell you how close it is. On stain-grade trim we match the species and let you know the stain is a finish line. New primed casing on painted trim matches after paint, which is quoted separately or done by you.
Do you install the closet doors too, or just the trim?
Both. We set the jamb and casing and hang the bifold, bypass or prehung door in the same visit, with the track, pivots, guides and pulls installed and the doors adjusted to meet evenly and clear the floor. If the doors are not on site yet we can do the jamb and casing first and come back, but one visit is cheaper.
