A built in desk is a desktop built to the wall or the nook it sits in, on base cabinets or a file drawer pedestal, with shelves or uppers above and a chase for the cords. A built-in desk is a top that runs wall to wall, or fills a nook or an emptied closet, resting on cabinets at each end and a support in the middle if the span needs one. Under the top: file drawers on one side, a cabinet or open knee space for the chair, a pencil drawer if you want it. Above: open shelves, uppers with doors, or a corkboard panel between them. All of it screwed to the studs and scribed to the walls.
The measurements that make an office built-in work are desk height, knee space width and depth, and where the monitors sit. Standard desk height suits most people; a taller or shorter person, or a sit-stand insert, changes it. Two monitors want a deeper top than a laptop. We draw it for how you work before we cut, and we plan a grommet and a chase so every cord drops behind the cabinets to one outlet.
The top is plywood with a hardwood edge for paint, or a solid maple, oak or walnut top for stain, or a laminate slab you order and we fit. A licensed electrician adds outlets in the knee space or inside a cabinet before the boxes go in. Two desks on one wall, a shared top for two kids, or a desk in a closet with the doors removed are all the same build with different widths.

- Photos of the wall, nook or closet straight on and from the side, the width, ceiling height and where the outlets, registers and windows are
- How you work: one or two people, monitors or a laptop, printer, files; and your height if you want the desk set for it
- Drawers and cabinets you want under the top, and open shelves vs. doored uppers above
- Paint-grade or stain-grade, door style, and cabinet hardware in the style you like
- A solid or laminate top if you are buying one; otherwise we build it
- Painting or staining is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself

A straight-on photo with a tape measure across the wall, and a note on how many people work there and what sits on the desk, is enough to sketch it and quote it.
How long it takes
A single desk with a pedestal and shelves above: two to three days on site. A wall-to-wall office with uppers, or two stations: four to five days. Electrical before the cabinets go in; painting after.

Situations and options
Wall-to-wall desk with uppers
A top the full width of the wall on two base cabinets, file drawers in one, open knee space in the middle, and uppers with doors or open shelves above. The full home office.
Desk in a nook
A top scribed between the two side walls of an alcove, on a single pedestal or cleats, with shelves above. Uses a spot too small for any desk you could buy.
Closet desk
Doors and casing come off a reach-in closet, the opening gets cased or drywalled square, and a desk top with drawers and shelves fills it. The closet becomes an office bay.
Two-person desk
One long top with a pedestal at each end and one in the middle, two knee spaces, and shelves above divided per person. Common for two kids or two people working from home.

How much does a built in desk cost?
It is priced per project from the width, what goes under the top (file drawers, cabinets, open knee space), what goes above, and paint-grade or stain-grade. There are no prices on this site; the quote comes from your photos and a wall measurement within one business day. A photo with a tape across the wall is enough to sketch it.
What height should a built in desk be?
Standard desk height suits most people sitting in a normal office chair, with the top thickness included in it. A tall or short person, or a keyboard tray, changes the number, so tell us how you sit. For a standing desk we build the top at standing height or leave the top open for a sit-stand frame you buy and we fit between the cabinets.
Where do the computer cords go with a built in desk?
Through a grommet in the top, down a chase behind the cabinets, to an outlet in the knee space or inside a cabinet. The electrician adds the outlet before the cabinets go in; we build the chase and cut the grommet. A printer inside a cabinet gets its own grommet in the cabinet back. Nothing runs down the front of anything.
Can you build a desk in a closet?
Yes. The doors, track and casing come off, the jamb is either kept and cased as a square opening or removed and the drywall wrapped, and a top with drawers and shelves fills the closet. A light and an outlet inside are added by an electrician. The closet shelf and rod usually come out; the shelf can stay as a top shelf if you want it.
What is the desktop made of?
For paint, plywood with a solid hardwood edge, filled and primed so it takes enamel smooth. For stain, a solid maple, oak or walnut top glued up from boards, or hardwood plywood with a solid edge. If you want a laminate or a stone top, you order the slab and we build the cabinets to fit it. Painting or staining is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.
Can a built in desk have file drawers?
Yes. A file drawer pedestal on one or both ends, with a deep drawer on full-extension slides and file rails for letter or legal folders, and a shallower drawer above it. Doors instead of drawers on the other end if you want a printer or a shredder behind them.
