Storm damaged window repair in Minneapolis, MN: JMB Builders documents each window hit by hail, wind or a falling limb, lists it as glass, sash, storm window, screen or full unit, walks it with your adjuster when you want us there, and repairs what your insurer approves. You file the claim and deal with the insurer. Priced per window; send photos and we reply within one business day.
- Priced per window, line by line
- Wood windows, storms and vinyl inserts
- Stained casing kept on insert repairs

A typical Minneapolis house from before the 1950s has wood double-hung windows with weight pockets, often behind aluminum combination storm windows, and a few openings where a past owner put in vinyl inserts. Hail and wind treat each one differently. Combination storms dent and their screens tear. Wood sashes take chips and cracked glass. Vinyl inserts split at the sash corners and crack along the sill, which is the damage most often missed.
The repair follows the window. A cracked pane in a sound wood sash is reglazed; a split sash or a rotted frame that the storm opened up means a replacement, usually an insert that keeps your stained interior casing. Where an original window is no longer made, matching becomes the question, and that is for your adjuster and your policy to answer in writing before anything is ordered.
You file the claim and talk to your insurer. We give you labeled photos and a line-item list, walk the windows with your adjuster when you want us there, and do the work once it is approved. General contractors also hire us for the window part of insurance repairs here. Minnesota law bars a contractor from waiving, rebating or paying your deductible, and we do not.

What you supply
- The storm date and any photos from that day
- Your claim number and the approved scope once you have them
- Access to each window inside and out, storms included
- Stain or paint color if interior trim is touched
What JMB supplies
- Photos of every damaged window and storm with a scale reference, labeled by side
- A line-item list: glass, sash, storm window, screen or full unit
- Meeting your adjuster on site when you want us there
- Reglazing, new glass units, sashes, storms or replacement windows as approved
- Inserts set inside the old frame so the stained casing stays
- Sill pan and flashing on any full-frame replacement
- Haul-away of broken glass and old units, and finished photos in your job folder
How it is priced: per window
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Reglazing a wood sash vs. a new sash vs. a replacement window
- Combination storm windows and screens listed on their own
- Insert replacement that keeps the casing vs. full-frame where the frame is rotted
- Upper-floor windows on a story-and-a-half or two-story that need ladders or staging
- Stucco or siding disturbed by a full-frame replacement
- Upgrades you choose beyond like-for-like, paid on top of the approved scope
Send each damaged window from outside with the storm in place, a close-up of each hit, and the inside casing.
How long it takes
Glass, sashes and windows are made to order, so most of the wait is the order. Reglazing and storm repairs go quickly; an insert is a few hours per window once it is here.

Storm Damaged Window Repair in Minneapolis, MN: questions, answered
Can hail damage old wood windows even if the glass did not break?
Yes. Hail chips the paint and dents the wood on the sash and the sill, and that is where water gets in next. On a window with a combination storm, the storm often takes the hit and shows dents and torn screen while the sash behind it is fine. We photograph both layers so the list is accurate.
Are the aluminum storm windows on my house part of a hail claim?
They can be listed as damage like any other part of the house. Whether and how they are covered is set by your policy, so check your policy and ask your agent. We photograph each dented storm and torn screen and list it as its own line.
If one original window is damaged, do all of them have to be replaced to match?
That is a policy question, not a contractor's call. Original wood windows from before the 1950s are not made anymore, so ask your adjuster in writing how your policy handles matching before anything is ordered. We give you photos that show the damaged window next to the ones around it.
Will replacing a storm-damaged window disturb my stained interior trim?
Usually not. An insert window goes inside the existing frame, so the stained casing, stool and apron stay where they are. A full-frame replacement does pull the casing, and we label it for reuse or match it.
Will JMB pay my deductible on a window claim?
No. Minnesota law bars a contractor from waiving, rebating or paying any part of your deductible, and JMB Builders does not. Your deductible is your share of the repair and is paid as part of the job.
Who files the insurance claim for my damaged windows?
You do. You file the claim and deal with your insurer, and your policy sets the deadlines, so check it and ask your agent. We document the damage, meet the adjuster when you want us there, and do the repair once it is approved.
