Hail Damaged Storm Windows — Dented Frames and Broken Glass Claim

The old house has wood windows with aluminum storm windows outside them, and the hail put dents in the frames and holes in the glass.

Hail damaged storm windows are the aluminum combination units mounted outside older wood windows: dented frames that no longer slide, broken glass panels, torn screens. JMB Builders photographs each storm window with a scale reference and lists it for your claim, meets the adjuster, then replaces the damaged units with new storm windows made to the opening. Twin Cities metro and north to St. Cloud. Priced per window.

A combination storm window is a thin aluminum frame screwed to the outside of a wood window, with two or three tracks holding glass panels and a screen that slide up and down. On houses from the 1950s through the 1980s they are everywhere, and hail finds them first. The frame is thin aluminum that dents easily, the glass is a single pane in a light sash, and a dent in a track means the panel will not slide or seal again.

They are easy to miss on a claim. The adjuster looks at the wood window behind, sees it is fine, and moves on. But the storm window is a separate item with its own line, and on a house with fifteen or twenty of them the count matters. We number every storm window on the house, photograph it wide and close with a coin or tape for scale, and mark what is wrong: frame dented, track bent, glass broken, screen torn, or fine.

Repair is usually replacement. Old storm windows are long out of production, the extrusions are not sold as parts, and a dented frame does not straighten. New combination storm windows are made to order to the measured opening, so we measure each one, order them, and install them sealed at the top and sides with weep holes at the bottom left open so water can drain. Check the wood windows behind them too: if hail got through a broken storm panel, the sash or glazing behind may be hit.

Three photos and a sentence is enough: a reply within one business day, or ask for a free in-home estimate. Or text the photos to 763-204-2099.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • Your claim number, and the adjuster's estimate if it is already written
  • Access to every window, inside and out, so the wood windows behind can be checked too
  • A choice of frame color and whether you want two-track or triple-track units
  • Your preference to keep storm windows or remove them, which changes the claim conversation

What JMB supplies

  • A numbered count of every storm window with photos, scale and what is damaged
  • A line-item list for your claim, separate from the wood windows behind
  • Your adjuster met at the house when you want us there
  • Each opening measured and new combination storm windows ordered to size
  • Old units removed and hauled away; new units set, fastened and sealed with weeps open
  • A check of the wood sash and glazing behind each broken storm panel
  • Finished photos in your job folder

How it is priced: per window

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Number of storm windows damaged and their sizes
  • Two-track vs. triple-track units and the frame color
  • Second-floor windows that need ladder or staging work
  • Wood brickmould or sills that are rotted under the old frame
  • Damage to the wood windows behind that adds its own lines

Send a photo of each side of the house and a close-up of each damaged storm window with a coin for scale. Note which ones still slide.

How long it takes

Measuring and photos on the first visit. New storm windows are made to order, so there is a lead time. Installing a house's worth usually takes a day.

Situations and options

Dented frame or track

The panels will not slide or the frame no longer seals to the window. Replaced with a new unit made to the opening, since the old extrusions are not sold as parts.

Broken glass panel only

The frame is straight and only a glass panel broke. Sometimes the panel can be reglazed by a glass shop; on old units it is often cleaner to replace the whole storm window. We tell you which from the photos.

Screen torn, frame fine

The storm window is sound and only the screen insert is torn or bent. Rescreened or a new insert made to size, and listed on the claim with the rest.

Wood window behind is hit too

Hail broke the storm glass and hit the sash or glazing behind it. Both go on the claim as separate lines, and the wood window repair is on its own page.

Hail Damaged Storm Windows — Dented Frames and Broken Glass Claim: questions, answered

Are storm windows covered on a hail claim?

Storm windows are part of the house, and hail damage to them is usually written as its own line on a storm claim; whether and how your policy pays is for you and your insurer, so check your policy and ask your agent. The key is getting each one photographed and counted, because adjusters often check the wood window behind and miss the storm window in front of it.

Can a hail dented aluminum storm window be repaired?

Rarely. The frame and tracks are thin aluminum extrusions, a dent in the track keeps the panels from sliding, and old storm windows are out of production so the parts are not sold. The usual fix is a new combination storm window made to the measured opening. A broken glass panel in a straight frame is sometimes reglazed instead.

How do you count storm windows for an insurance claim?

Every storm window on the house gets a number tied to its location, a wide photo and a close-up with a coin or tape for scale, and a note: frame dented, track bent, glass broken, screen torn, or undamaged. That list goes to your insurer as its own section of the scope. A full count shows the whole house was checked.

Can I replace triple track storm windows with the same kind?

Yes. Two-track and triple-track combination storm windows are still made, to order, in standard frame colors. We measure each opening and order them to fit, so the new ones sit where the old ones did. Like-for-like is what a claim usually covers; a different style is an upgrade paid directly.

Should I check the wood windows behind a broken storm window?

Yes. If hail broke through the storm glass, it may have cracked the pane or the glazing putty behind it or dented the sash. Photograph the wood window too, and list it as its own line. A storm window that kept the hail off the wood window did its job and is the only item to replace.

Can you install storm windows I buy myself?

Yes. If you order the storm windows, send us the order and photos first and we check the sizes, then install them labor only. On a claim, the line-item scope should still list the original units so the adjuster's numbers match what was damaged.
