Entry door replacement in Plymouth: JMB Builders measures your opening, orders the fiberglass or steel prehung door you choose, often with sidelites or a transom, takes out the old unit, repairs rot at the sill and jamb, sets the new door in a pan with flashing, and trims it to match the house inside and out. Priced per door; send photos or schedule a free in-home estimate.
- Priced per door
- Fiberglass or steel, sidelites and transoms
- Interior trim matched to the house

Front doors in Plymouth come in two main kinds. In the 1960s–70s homes there is often an original wood door, sometimes with a single sidelite, swollen in July and drafty in February. In the 1990s–2000s two-stories there is a tall entry with sidelites and sometimes a transom, factory steel or early fiberglass, with weatherstrip that has gone flat and finish that has faded.
Owners here tend to pick a better-grade door, usually fiberglass with a wood-grain finish that can be stained, or a smooth painted door with decorative glass. Since the door, sidelites and transom are usually ordered as one unit, we measure the full rough opening, the wall thickness and the transom height before anything is ordered.
On install day the old unit comes out and the sill area is opened up. Rot at the jamb feet and subfloor is cut out and replaced, a sill pan goes down, and flashing tape is lapped at the sides and head. The new door is shimmed so it closes on the weatherstrip without force, then foamed, sealed and trimmed. Inside, the casing is matched to the rest of the entry. We also do entry doors in New Hope and Brooklyn Park.

How it is priced: per door
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

- Single door vs. door with sidelites, with or without a transom
- Rot at the sill and jamb once the old unit is out
- Brick, stone or siding around the entry
- Matching custom or stained casing inside
- Staining or painting, quoted as its own line
Send a photo of the entry from the street, the inside trim, and a close-up of the bottom of the jamb.

Situations and options
Stain-grade fiberglass
A wood-grain fiberglass door stained to match the rest of the entry trim. It does not swell like a wood door.
Door with sidelites and transom
Ordered and installed as one unit. The transom is set level and flashed at the head so water sheds off the whole assembly.
Replacing an original wood door
In older Plymouth homes we often find the old jamb out of square. The new prehung unit goes in plumb and square, and the casing is scribed to the wall.
Front and Entry Door Replacement in Plymouth, MN: questions, answered
What front door holds up best in Plymouth winters?
A well-installed fiberglass or steel prehung door with a good weatherstrip both work. Fiberglass does not dent or swell and can be stained to look like wood. Steel is usually less money. The install matters as much as the door: a pan, flashing and a door that closes on its seals.
Can you replace a front door with sidelites and a transom?
Yes. The door, sidelites and transom are usually ordered together as one unit sized to your opening. The whole assembly gets a pan under it and flashing at the head, then it is trimmed inside and out.
Can my new front door be stained to match my woodwork?
Yes, with a stain-grade fiberglass door. We stain it on site or order it factory finished, and stain the new casing to match. Staining is quoted as its own line.
Do I need a permit for a new front door in Plymouth?
A same-size door replacement often does not need a permit, but cities differ and resizing the opening can change that. We check with the City of Plymouth building department and pull a permit when it is required.
Why does my old wood front door stick in summer?
Wood takes on moisture in humid weather and swells, then shrinks in winter and leaves gaps. Planing it helps for a while. A fiberglass or steel door in a new frame does not move that way.
How do I get a front door quote in Plymouth?
