Entry door replacement in Anoka MN: the door measured and ordered in the size, swing and style you choose, the old door and frame pulled, rot at the sill and jamb repaired, the new prehung unit set in a sill pan, and trimmed inside to match the house. JMB Builders, licensed and based in Zimmerman, trues up out-of-square openings in older homes. Priced per door, quoted from photos or an in-home visit.

  • Priced per door, door included
  • Out-of-square openings trued up
  • Stained casing matched where you want it
Arched brick surround with a new double casement window, front entry at right

Front doors in Anoka's early-1900s homes have had a long time to settle. The opening is rarely square anymore, the threshold has worn down, and the bottom of the jamb has often taken water for decades. A stock prehung door will not drop into an opening like that. We check diagonals and level, then shim, plane or rebuild the rough opening so the new door swings and seals.

In the postwar and 1970s–80s neighborhoods the problem is simpler: a dented steel or tired wood door, packed-down weatherstrip, a lock that barely meets the strike and sometimes a soft sill. These are mostly same-size swaps, done in about a day.

Either way the new unit goes on a dry sill: rot cut out, a sill pan down, flashing tape lapped at the sides and head, foam and sealant, then brickmould outside and casing inside. In an older house we can match the stained casing so the door looks like it belongs. Painting or staining is quoted separately. We do entry doors in Anoka and nearby Champlin and Andover.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • Your pick of door: steel or fiberglass, glass or solid, paint or stain grade
  • Lockset and deadbolt finish, or your own hardware
  • Photos of the door from both sides, the sill close-up, and the casing inside
  • Whether the inside trim should be stained to match the rest of the house

What JMB supplies

  • In-person measurement and the order for a prehung door in the right size, swing and jamb width
  • Old door, frame and trim removed and hauled away
  • Rough opening trued up where an older house has settled out of square
  • Rot repair at the sill plate, jamb feet or subfloor, quoted from what we find
  • Sill pan, flashing tape, foam, sealant, shims and fasteners
  • Brickmould or exterior trim, and interior casing matched to existing trim when needed
  • Lockset, deadbolt, strike and weatherstrip adjusted so the door latches and seals

How it is priced: per door

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • The door: steel vs. fiberglass, glass lites, factory finish or primed
  • How far out of square the opening is and how much truing it needs
  • Rot at the sill, jamb feet and subfloor once the old door is out
  • Matching a stained, older casing profile vs. standard trim
  • Sidelites or a transom, which change the unit and the opening
  • Hardware: a basic lockset vs. a handle set or smart lock

How long it takes

Same-size swap in a sound opening: about a day. An older opening that needs truing, rot repair or matched trim can run into a second day.

Situations and options

Stain-grade fiberglass

A fiberglass door with a wood-grain skin that takes stain. A common pick when the house has stained millwork and a painted steel door would look out of place.

Painted steel or smooth fiberglass

A plain choice for a rambler front door or a side entry. Steel needs paint to stay sealed; smooth fiberglass takes paint and does not dent.

Door you already bought

If the door is waiting in your garage, we install it the same way — truing, rot repair, pan, flashing and trim — and price the job as labor only.

Entry Door Replacement in Anoka, MN — Old Openings Trued Up: questions, answered

Can a new front door fit an old, out-of-square opening?

Yes. A prehung door needs a square opening, so we shim, plane or rebuild the rough opening until it is plumb and square before setting the new unit. In an early-1900s Anoka house that is often part of the job. The door is ordered to the size we measure after checking how far out the opening is.

Do I need a permit to replace an entry door in Anoka?

It depends on the work. Most cities require a permit when an opening is resized or framing changes. We check with the City of Anoka building department for your door and pull the permit when one is needed.

Should I replace just the door slab or the whole unit?

If the frame is dry, square and solid, a new slab can work. In most older doors the jamb feet and sill are soft or the frame has racked, and a new slab in that frame will bind and leak like the old one. Replacing the prehung unit lets us fix the opening and set the door on a pan.

Can you match the old stained trim around my front door?

Yes. We match the casing profile and wood species as close as we can and stain to blend, so the new door does not read as a patch. That finish work is a separate line on the quote, and so is painting.

Is fiberglass or steel better for a front door in an older house?

Fiberglass does not dent, holds up to sun and comes with a wood-grain texture that takes stain, so it sits well in a house with stained woodwork. Steel is solid and simple but dents and needs paint to stay sealed. Either one seals well when the frame is set square on a sill pan.

How soon can my new entry door be installed?

The install is about a day once the door is here. The wait is the order, which depends on the manufacturer, glass and finish. We give you the expected date when the order is placed, and the old door stays in until the new one is on site.
