New windows with new exterior trim means every window and its outside casing, sill and drip cap done on one quote. JMB Builders installs the windows, then either wraps the existing wood in aluminum capping or replaces it with PVC or primed casing, opening by opening. Rot is fixed before anything is covered. Twin Cities metro, priced per project; photo quote, reply within one business day, or a free in-home estimate.
- Windows and outside trim on one quote
- Capping or new casing, chosen by opening
- Rot repaired before it is covered

Most replacement windows are installed and caulked to the old exterior casing. If that casing is peeling or soft, the new window looks bad from the street and the paint job is due again. Doing the trim at the same time is cheaper than a second trip, and the trim is fitted to the new window instead of the old one.
There are two ways to go. Capping bends prefinished aluminum coil over the existing casing and sill, so the wood is covered and not painted. New casing pulls the old wood and replaces it with cellular PVC or primed wood. Either way, we probe every piece first. Soft wood is cut out and replaced before it gets covered, and a drip cap goes over the head.

What you supply
- Your choice: capping, PVC casing, or primed wood casing (we can mix by side)
- Coil or trim color
- Profile if you want a wider casing or a different sill nose
- If you pick primed wood: Painting is quoted as a separate line, or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.
What JMB supplies
- Windows measured, ordered and installed with sill pans and flashing
- Every exterior casing and sill probed for rot
- Rotted wood cut out and replaced before capping or new trim
- Drip cap over each head
- Aluminum coil bent on site to fit each window, or PVC/primed casing cut and fastened
- Sealant at the siding and frame joints
- Each window's trim listed on the quote
How it is priced: per project
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Number of windows and the install method on each
- Capping over existing wood vs. new PVC or primed casing
- Amount of rot in casings and sills
- Width of the casing and whether the sill has a nose
- Second-story windows needing ladders or staging
- Siding type around the trim: lap, shakes, stucco or brick
Send a close-up of the worst sill and casing corner. That is where the rot is, and it sets the repair line.
How long it takes
Trim adds time to each window. Inserts with capping usually run about three to five a day; full frame with new casing about one to three. The schedule is on the quote.

Situations and options
Insert windows with capping
The old frame and casing stay, rot is fixed, and the outside is wrapped in coil. The quickest path from peeling trim to a finished look.
Full frame with new PVC casing
Old frame and casing come out, the opening is flashed to the wall, and new cellular PVC casing goes on. Right for rotted frames and houses getting a new look.
Mixed by side
Capping on the back and sides, new wider casing on the front. Each window's trim is its own line, so you can mix.
New Windows With New Exterior Trim — Capping or PVC on One Quote: questions, answered
Should exterior trim be replaced when windows are replaced?
If it is peeling, soft or split, yes. The new window is caulked to that trim, so bad trim means bad joints from the first day. Doing it on the same visit costs less than a second trip and the trim is fitted to the new window.
What is the difference between window capping and new trim?
Capping is prefinished aluminum coil bent over the existing wood casing and sill, so the wood is covered and not painted. New trim replaces the wood with cellular PVC or primed wood. Capping is usually cheaper; new trim is the choice when the wood is too far gone or you want a different profile.
Can you put aluminum capping over rotted trim?
No. Rotted wood is cut out and replaced first, then capped. Wrapping rot hides it and lets it keep spreading under the coil.
Is PVC exterior trim better than wood?
PVC does not absorb water the way wood does, and it can be left white or painted. Primed wood costs less and takes paint well but needs repainting over time. Both need flashing behind them; the trim is not the water barrier.
Do insert windows get new exterior trim?
They can. The old frame stays and the existing casing is capped or the outer casing replaced, then the new window is sealed to it. Each window's trim choice is listed on the quote.
Will new exterior trim need painting?
Aluminum capping and prefinished coil do not get painted. PVC can be left white or painted. Primed wood needs paint: Painting is quoted as a separate line, or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.
