Mismatched Windows? Replace to Match — One Line, One Color, One Grille
Three owners, three window brands. The whites are different whites, the grilles do not line up and one side of the house looks like a different house.

Mismatched windows, replace to match: we list every window in the house with its brand, color, grille pattern and condition, decide which (if any) can stay, and replace the rest in one line, one frame color and one grille pattern. JMB Builders does this across the Twin Cities metro, priced per opening on a line-item quote. Send photos for a reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.
- Priced per opening, every window listed
- Each window inventoried: brand, color, grilles
- Keep-or-replace call made window by window

A patchwork house happens a few windows at a time. One owner replaced the kitchen after a leak, the next did the bedrooms from a store, someone swapped the basement units. Each job was fine on its own. Together the house now has bright white next to almond, colonial grilles next to none, meeting rails at three different heights and frames of different widths along the same wall.
The fix starts with a list, not an order. At the measure we go window by window and write down what each one is: brand and series where a label or glass marking shows it, frame color, grille pattern, insert or full frame, and condition. Then you decide what the house should look like, one line, one color and one grille pattern, and we look at which existing windows could stay without standing out.
Usually the answer is that the newest set can stay only if the new line comes close on color and sightlines, and the rest are replaced. Sometimes it is cleaner to do every window. The quote lists each opening on its own line, so you can see both versions priced and choose. Everything new goes on one order so it matches itself.

- A line-item quote by opening, with a replace-all version if you want it
- One in-person measure of every opening before ordering

- Room-by-room install, each opening closed before we leave
- Haul-away of the old windows and photos in your job folder
How it is priced: per opening
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- How many windows are replaced and how many can stay
- Brand, series, frame color and glass package chosen for the house
- Grille pattern and grille type on the new windows
- Insert or full frame, which changes how wide the frame looks
- Mismatched interior trim that has to be redone to line up
- Exterior capping or trim, and the cladding around each opening
Photograph any labels, etched glass marks or old stickers. They tell us what each existing window is before the measure.
How long it takes
Lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote. Once delivered, most houses install in a few working days to about a week, room by room.

Situations and options
Replace every window
The cleanest result: one line, color, glass and grille pattern everywhere. Best when the existing replacements are old, a different color, or a different frame width.
Keep the newest set
If one recent group is in good shape and the chosen line comes close on color and sightlines, those stay and the rest are replaced. We show you a sample against them before ordering.
Match by elevation
Every window on a wall you see together is replaced so that wall reads as one; a back or basement wall waits. Each opening is its own line, so phasing is simple.
Mismatched Windows? Replace to Match — One Line, One Color, One Grille: questions, answered
Can I make all my windows match without replacing every one?
Sometimes. If one group of existing windows is recent, in good shape and close to the color and frame width of the line you pick, it can stay. If it is a different white, a different grille pattern or a much wider frame, it will still stand out next to the new ones. We check that at the measure with a sample in hand.
Why do my white windows look like different colors?
Each manufacturer makes its own white, and many offer more than one, such as a bright white and an almond or tan. Older vinyl can also yellow with sun. Next to each other the difference shows, which is why a matched house uses one line and one color.
Is it bad to have different window brands in one house?
It is not a performance problem, but it shows. Frame width, sash height, grille pattern and white shade differ between brands, so mixed windows on one wall look patched. If you are replacing most of them anyway, putting the whole house in one line is what makes it look finished.
How do I find out what brand my existing windows are?
Look for a sticker or label on the frame or sash, a small etched mark in a corner of the glass, or old paperwork from the house. Send photos of those with your window photos. If nothing is marked, we note style, color and frame width at the measure instead.
Do mismatched grilles need to be fixed?
Only if they bother you. Colonial grilles next to none, or different patterns on the same wall, are one of the most visible mismatches. When we replace to match, you pick one grille pattern, or none, and every new window on that wall gets it.
Will the interior trim match after replacing mismatched windows?
It can. Past jobs often left different stops, casings and reveals from room to room. The quote can include new stops or casing at each opening so the trim lines up, primed and caulked. Painting is quoted as a separate line, or you paint it.
