Closet kits are sold by the box, not by the closet. A ClosetMaid wire kit, an Elfa hanging system, a Rubbermaid configurable kit or a Menards Dakota laminate closet all come sized for a nominal width, and every real closet is a different width, out of square, and has studs in the wrong places. Getting one in right is a layout job, a stud-finding job and a cutting job before it is an assembly job.
What goes wrong when it is done fast: uprights screwed into drywall anchors that pull out under a rod of winter coats, shelves cut short so the end brackets float, a hanging rail that is not level so every shelf leans, and a double-hang section that is too low to hang a shirt. We anchor into studs or add a wood cleat where there is none, cut the shelves and rods to the actual wall-to-wall dimension, and set the rod heights for what actually goes in that closet.
We install what you bought. We are not a dealer for any of these brands and we do not sell closet systems. If you have not bought yet, send us the closet photos and measurements and we will tell you what to order so nothing is short.
What you supply
- The closet kit, all boxes: rails, uprights, shelves, rods, brackets, drawers and end caps
- Extra shelf or rod stock if the kit's nominal width is less than the closet (we tell you before you buy)
- A rough idea of what hangs where: long hang, double hang, shelves, shoes, drawers
- Any drawer units, baskets or accessories you want fitted in the same visit
- Paint color if the closet is being repainted first — painting is quoted as a separate line, or paint it yourself
What JMB supplies
- Layout of the closet on the wall before a hole is drilled: rod heights, shelf spacing, corner treatment
- Stud location and structural screws into the framing for every rail and upright
- A painted or primed wood cleat where a stud does not fall under an upright, or on a block or plaster wall
- Cutting shelves, rods and rails to the real wall-to-wall dimension, with end caps replaced
- Removal of the old shelf-and-rod or wire shelving and patching of the old screw holes
- Rehanging the closet doors and adjusting them so they clear the new shelves
- Photos of the finished closet in your job folder
- Painting of the closet or the patched walls when you want it, quoted as its own line

Send a photo of each closet wall, a tape across the back wall and the depth, a shot of the old shelf and rod, and the kit's box label or listing.
How long it takes
A reach-in closet with a wire or rail kit: two to four hours. A walk-in with laminate towers and drawers: most of a day. Add time when the old shelving comes out and the walls get patched.

Situations and options
Wire shelf kits (ClosetMaid, Rubbermaid)
Ventilated wire shelving on wall clips and support brackets, or on a hanging rail with adjustable uprights. We cut the shelves and rods to length with a bolt cutter, cap the ends, and anchor the clips and brackets into studs so a loaded rod does not sag or pull out.
Hanging rail systems (Elfa and similar)
One top rail carries everything, so it has to be dead level and screwed into every stud it crosses. We set the rail, hang the uprights, then clip in shelves, rods, drawers and baskets to your layout. Easy to rearrange later, which is the point of the system.
Laminate tower kits (Menards Dakota and similar)
Flat-pack towers with shelves and rods spanning between them. We assemble the towers square, level them on a wavy floor, anchor them to the wall so they cannot tip, cut the spanning shelves and rods to fit, and set filler where the tower meets an out-of-square wall.
Kit plus carpentry
A kit that stops short of the ceiling or the side wall looks like a kit. We add a top shelf, a wood cleat, a filler or a small face frame in paint-grade stock so the system reads as built in. Quoted with the install from your photos.

Do you install closet organizer kits I bought at the store?
Yes. Buy the ClosetMaid, Elfa, Rubbermaid, Dakota or other kit wherever you like and JMB Builders installs it anywhere in the Twin Cities metro, labor only. We are an independent installer, not a dealer for any closet brand. We lay it out, anchor it to studs, cut it to the closet and rehang the doors, then send photos of the finished closet.
Can a closet kit be screwed into drywall with the plastic anchors in the box?
It can, and that is why so many of them end up on the floor. A rod of coats or a shelf of sweaters is real weight, and drywall anchors hold until the day they do not. We locate the studs and drive structural screws into them, and where an upright or bracket lands between studs we mount a painted wood cleat first. The kit's own anchors go back in the box.
What if the kit is wider or narrower than my closet?
Almost every kit is. Wire shelves and rods are cut to the wall-to-wall width and recapped; laminate shelves are cut on a saw and re-edged; hanging rails are cut to length. When the closet is wider than the kit, the fix is an extra shelf section or a filler at one end, and we tell you which to buy before install day so we do not come out short.
How high should the rods and shelves be?
It depends on what goes in the closet. Double hang works for shirts and folded pants; long hang is for dresses and coats; a kid's closet gets a rod they can reach with room to raise it later. We ask what you hang before we lay out the wall, mark it in pencil, and you can look at it before anything is drilled.
Do you take out the old shelf and rod first?
Yes. The old wood shelf, cleats and rod, or the old wire shelving, come out and the screw holes get patched. If the closet is getting painted, this is the time to do it, before the new kit goes on the wall. Painting is quoted as a separate line, or paint it yourself between our removal visit and the install.
Will the closet doors still work after the kit is in?
We check that before we set the top shelf. Bifold and bypass doors need clearance at the top track and at the sides, and a shelf or a drawer tower set too close binds them. We take the doors down for the install, put them back, and adjust the track and pivots so they run clear of the new shelving.
