Running a line to a detached building is two jobs: the trench and the line. We dig and backfill. A licensed electrician or plumber lays the conduit or pipe, makes the connections and pulls the permit for their part. The inspector looks at the line in the open trench, and only then does it get covered.
Depth is set by the trade and the code for that line. Water lines have to be deep enough to stay below frost. Electric has its own depth depending on the wire and conduit. We dig to what the trade tells us, with a straight bottom and no rocks against the pipe.
Before we dig, Gopher State One Call (811) marks the public lines. Private lines already in the yard, like irrigation, a line to a well or an existing feed to another building, are not marked by 811 and need to be pointed out by the owner.

How deep does a trench for electric to a garage need to be?
It depends on the wire, the conduit and what it runs under, and the electrician sets the depth to code. We dig to the depth they call for. The electrician pulls the permit and the inspector checks the depth before backfill.
How deep does a water line to a shop need to be in Minnesota?
Deep enough to stay below frost, which is deep in Minnesota. The plumber sets the depth to code for your area and we dig to it. Some owners add insulation board over the pipe where depth is limited; that is the plumber's call.
Can I dig the trench and have an electrician run the wire?
Yes, that is how most of these jobs go. The trench is dug, a licensed electrician lays the conduit and wire and makes the connections, the inspection happens with the trench open, and then it is backfilled. Talk to the electrician first so the route and depth are set.
Why does the trench have to stay open for inspection?
The inspector needs to see the depth, the conduit or pipe and any warning tape before it is buried. If the trench is backfilled first, it may have to be dug back open. We backfill after the inspection passes.
Do I need to call 811 before digging a trench in my yard?

Will the yard be a mess after trenching?
There is a strip of disturbed ground over the trench. We backfill in layers, compact it, and grade it back so it does not sink. Seed or sod over the strip can be added to the job.
