Replace a 3 Panel Sliding Patio Door — and 4-Panel Wide Sliders
Your patio door is three or four panels wide, the rollers are shot, the glass has fogged and nobody wants to quote it because it does not come off a store shelf.

To replace a 3 panel sliding patio door or a 4-panel slider up to about twelve feet wide, JMB Builders checks the header and sill at an in-person measure, orders the door in the same panel layout or a new one, and sets the heavy panels with a full crew on a full-length sill pan. - Priced per door
- Header and sill checked before ordering
- Full crew for heavy panels

A standard slider is two panels: one fixed, one moving, about six or eight feet wide. Three- and four-panel doors run nine to twelve feet or more. The common layouts are a center panel that slides between two fixed panels, two sliders that part in the middle of a four-panel door, or a door where two panels stack to one side. They are made to order, they weigh a lot more, and they put more load on the opening than a standard slider does.
The measure is where the big questions get answered. Is the header over the opening sized for that span, or has it sagged so the old panels bind at the top? Is the floor under a ten-foot sill flat, or does it crown or dip? Which layout do you want, and do you want to keep the same opening or change it? If the opening gets wider, a new header is sized to code, or by an engineer when the span or the load above calls for it, and a permit is pulled when the city requires one.
Install day takes a full crew and a clear path. The fixed panels and frame come out, the subfloor is checked and repaired along the whole length, and a full-length sill pan goes down before the new frame is set and shimmed dead level. A long sill that is not flat is the reason big sliders drag and leak. Panels go in last, then rollers, locks and screens are adjusted. Floors are covered from the door to the driveway, and the opening is closed before the crew leaves.

Situations and options
Three panels, center slider
Two fixed panels with a moving center panel, or one fixed and two moving. Common on 1990s great rooms; often replaced in the same layout.
Four panels, center-opening
Two moving panels that part in the middle between two fixed ones. A wide opening to a deck or patio, about twelve feet in many homes.
Same width, different layout
The opening stays, the panel layout changes, for example a three-panel door replaced with a two-panel slider and a fixed sidelite, ordered to the same rough opening.
Replace a 3 Panel Sliding Patio Door — and 4-Panel Wide Sliders: questions, answered
Can a 3 panel sliding door be replaced with the same size?
Yes, and that is the most common version. The door is measured in person, ordered in the same rough opening size and panel layout, and set in the existing opening after the sill and subfloor are checked. Keeping the opening avoids header and wall work.
Do I need a new header for a wider sliding door?
If the opening gets wider, yes. The header is sized to code for the new span, or by an engineer when the span or the load above it calls for it, and a permit is pulled when the city requires one. A same-size replacement keeps the existing header if it has not sagged.
Why does my wide sliding door drag at the top or the bottom?
On a wide door, a header that has deflected pinches the panels at the top, and a sill that is not flat makes them ride uphill. New rollers do not fix either. Both get checked at the measure, and the new frame is set dead level on a full-length sill pan.
How many people does it take to install a 12 foot sliding door?
A full crew. The glass panels on a wide door are heavy and the frame is long, so it is carried and set by several people with a clear path from the driveway. That is planned at the measure so the right number of hands is there on install day.
How long does a four panel sliding door take to arrive?
Wide sliders are made to order, so they usually take longer than a standard two-panel door. The lead time depends on the brand and line and is written on the quote. Nothing is ordered until the opening has been measured in person.
Can a 4 panel sliding door be changed to French doors?
Sometimes. A wide opening can take a pair of hinged doors with fixed sidelites, ordered to the same rough opening. Hinged doors need swing room inside or out, so furniture and deck layout get checked at the measure before choosing.
