Storm Door for Double Doors — A Pair Over French or Double Entry Doors
Your double front doors or French doors have no storm door, because a single one will not cover them.

A storm door for double doors is really two storm doors hung as a pair: one hinged on each side, meeting in the middle at an astragal, each with its own closer, and the fixed leaf held with bolts. JMB Builders installs pairs over double entry and French doors across the Twin Cities metro, supplied by us or bought by you. Priced per pair, quoted from photos, with a reply within one business day.
- Priced per pair of storm doors
- Astragal, two closers and bolts set
- Supplied by us or the pair you bought

Double entry doors and French doors are wider than any single storm door. The answer is a pair: a left-hand and a right-hand storm door, each hinged to the brickmould on its side, meeting in the middle. One leaf is the one you use every day. The other stays shut, held by bolts at the top and bottom, and opens only when you move furniture in. An astragal strip on the meeting edge closes the gap between them so the pair seals like one door.
A pair is fussier than a single storm door. Both hinge rails have to be plumb, the head expander has to run level across the whole width, and the two leaves have to meet flat in the middle or the astragal will not seal and the latch will not catch. Each leaf gets its own closer and wind chain, set so the active leaf does not slam into the fixed one. Pairs are sold in fewer sizes than single storm doors and are often special-order, so the opening is measured before anything is bought.
The step matters too. Storm doors swing out, and two of them swing out over the step from both sides. If there is a railing, a light or a narrow stoop, the leaves can hit it. We look at that from your photos before you order.

How it is priced: per unit
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- A pair you bought vs. a pair we order to fit
- Standard pair size vs. a special-order size for a wide or tall opening
- Brickmould condition across the full width, including the center where there is no trim
- Full-view glass pairs, which are heavier, vs. ventilating pairs
- A step, railing or light fixture that has to be worked around
- Painting repaired trim, quoted as its own line
Send a straight-on photo of the double doors from outside, a photo of the step from the side, and the width between the brickmould at the top, middle and bottom.
How long it takes
One pair of storm doors on sound brickmould: most of a day. Add time for brickmould repair. A pair we supply is ordered after you approve the quote.

Situations and options
Pair over double entry doors
Two storm doors over a pair of front doors, one active and one fixed with bolts. Usually full-view glass so the entry doors show. The fixed leaf opens when you need the full width.
Pair over exterior French doors
French doors to a deck or patio, with a storm pair in front for screened air in summer. Ventilating leaves with sliding glass let you open the screen without swapping panels.
Retractable screens on double doors
If what you want is screens, not storm glass, retractable screens that pull across from each side are another way to cover a double door. We cover those on our retractable screen door page.
Opening wider than a standard pair
Some double doors with an oversize frame are wider than stock pairs. Those take a special-order pair or a build-out of the brickmould to bring the opening into range. We tell you which from your measurements.
Storm Door for Double Doors — A Pair Over French or Double Entry Doors: questions, answered
Can you put a storm door on double doors?
Yes, as a pair. One storm door is hinged on each side of the opening and the two meet in the middle at an astragal. One leaf is used every day and the other is held shut with top and bottom bolts. JMB Builders installs pairs over double entry and French doors across the Twin Cities metro, supplied by us or bought by you.
How do double storm doors latch in the middle?
The fixed leaf is held at the top and bottom with bolts. The active leaf latches to the fixed leaf, and an astragal strip covers the gap where they meet. It only works if both hinge rails are plumb and the leaves meet flat, so most of the install time goes into getting the two sides to line up.
Do I need a special storm door for French entry doors?
You need a pair sized for the full width of the opening, not one wide single door. Pairs come in fewer sizes than single storm doors and are often special-order. Measure the width between the brickmould at the top, middle and bottom and the height to the head trim, and send those with a photo before you buy.
Do double storm doors need two closers?
Yes. Each leaf has its own closer and wind chain. The fixed leaf's closer keeps it from flapping when you open it for furniture. The active leaf's closer is set so it closes softly against the fixed leaf instead of slamming into it.
Will a pair of storm doors hit my railing or step?
It can. Storm doors swing out, and a pair swings out from both sides of the opening. A railing close to the door, a narrow stoop, or a light fixture beside the brickmould can be in the way. Send a photo of the step from the side and we check the swing before anything is ordered.
How long does it take to install a pair of storm doors?
Most of a day for one pair on sound brickmould. A pair is more than twice the work of one storm door, because the two leaves have to line up in the middle and the head expander has to run level across the full width. Brickmould repair adds time.
