Storm Door With Pet Door — Built-In Panel Matched to the Entry Door

The dog uses the back door twelve times a day and the storm door is in the way.

A storm door with a pet door is ordered with the pet panel built into its lower section, because a storm door's glass and thin frame cannot be cut on site. The entry door behind it needs its own pet door at the same height. JMB Builders supplies and installs both across the Twin Cities metro. Priced per door. Send photos and we reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.

  • Priced per door, pet panel included
  • Factory pet panel, not a cut in the glass
  • Lined up with a pet door in the entry door
Arched brick surround with a new double casement window, front entry at right

There are two doors between your dog and the yard: the entry door and the storm door in front of it. A pet door in only one of them does not help. The usual setup is a pet door cut into the entry door and a storm door with a pet panel built into its lower section, set so the two openings line up and the pet walks straight through.

The storm door half cannot be done with a saw. A full-view storm door is a glass panel in a thin aluminum frame, and the bottom of most other storm doors is a hollow kick panel. Cutting either leaves a raw edge, a weak panel or broken glass. Some storm door makers sell models with a pet door built into the lower panel, sized for cats, small dogs or large dogs. We confirm the line with our ABC branch before the quote is final, and we pick the pet size before ordering, because the panel is made at the factory.

The entry door side is a standard pet door install: a square cut through a steel, fiberglass or wood door, the core sealed and the frame clamped through. We set its height to match the storm door's panel, so the pet does not step through one and jump through the other. A sliding patio door is a different job; see our patio door for dogs page.

What JMB supplies

  • One in-person measure of the opening, the entry door and the pet's size
  • A storm door ordered with a built-in pet panel sized to your pet
  • A pet door cut into the entry door, core sealed, frame set at the matching height
  • Old storm door removed and hauled away, soft brickmould repaired first
  • Storm door installed with the closer and wind chain set so it does not slam on a tail
  • Photos of both doors in your job folder

How it is priced: per door

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Pet panel size: cat, small dog or large dog
  • Whether the entry door also needs a pet door, and what it is made of
  • An entry door with glass in the lower half, which cannot be cut
  • Brickmould repair before the storm door can be mounted
  • Storm door style and color
  • Painting repaired trim, quoted as a separate line

Send your pet's shoulder height and width, a photo of the entry door from outside, and tell us whether the entry door is steel, fiberglass or wood.

How long it takes

Storm door with a pet panel and a pet door in the entry door: about half a day. Lead time on the storm door depends on the brand and is written on the quote.

Situations and options

Storm door with a built-in pet panel

The pet door is part of the storm door's lower panel from the factory. Nothing is cut on site, the panel stays square, and the storm door keeps its weatherstrip and sweep.

Cat door storm door

A smaller pet panel for a cat. Mounted low, since cats step through, and paired with a cat-size door in the entry door so the two openings match.

Large dog storm door

The biggest pet panels take up much of the storm door's lower section. We check that the dog's shoulder height clears the top of the opening in both doors before ordering.

Pet door through the wall instead

If the entry door has glass in the lower half, or you would rather leave both doors alone, a pet door through the wall beside the door is another way out. See our pet door installation page.

Storm Door With Pet Door — Built-In Panel Matched to the Entry Door: questions, answered

Can you cut a dog door into my storm door?

Generally no. A storm door is a glass panel or a hollow kick panel in a thin aluminum frame, and cutting it leaves a weak panel or broken glass. The way to do it is a storm door ordered with a pet panel built in.

Does the front door also need a pet door if the storm door has one?

Yes, unless you leave the entry door open. The pet has to get through both doors, so the entry door gets its own pet door, set at the same height as the storm door's panel.

What size pet door storm door do I need?

Measure your pet's height at the shoulder and width at the widest point, and size for the biggest pet that will use it. Pet panels come in cat, small dog and large dog sizes. We confirm the size before ordering, since the panel is made at the factory.

Will a storm door with a pet door let cold air in?

A little more than a storm door without one. The entry door's pet door is the one that matters most in winter, so pick one with a sealed flap and a lock-out panel for the coldest nights.

Can a pet door go in an entry door with glass in it?

Not through the glass. If the glass runs low in the door, there may be no solid section big enough for the pet door. Then a pet door through the wall beside the door is the usual answer.

Will the storm door close on my dog?

The dog goes through the pet panel, not the door, so the storm door stays shut. When people hold the door open, the closer is set so it shuts slowly instead of slamming.
