A double entry door is two slabs in one frame: an active door with the lockset and an inactive door held shut by flush bolts at the top and bottom, with an astragal down the middle where they meet. It works only when the frame is dead square. Once the header sags or the sill settles, the doors stop meeting evenly, the astragal gaps, and cold air and water come in at the center.
We measure the opening and order a new prehung pair to fit it, in the material, glass and color you choose. When the old unit comes out we look hard at the header, since a wide opening puts more load on it, and at the sill, where the center of a double door collects the most water. Soft framing is cut out and rebuilt before the new unit goes in.
The new pair is set in a full-width sill pan, flashed at the sides and head, and shimmed until the two doors meet flush top to bottom. The flush bolts get their holes drilled in the head jamb and sill so the inactive door locks solid, and the active door latches into it without pushing. Then foam, sealant, brickmould outside and casing inside. Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

Why don't my double front doors line up in the middle?
Usually the frame has moved. A sagging header pushes the top of the doors together, a settling sill drops one side, or worn hinges let a door droop. Adjusting hinges can buy some time, but when the frame itself is out of square, replacing the unit and setting it square is what fixes it.
What is an astragal on a double door?
It is the strip down the edge of the inactive door that the active door closes against. It carries weatherstrip and houses the flush bolts that lock the inactive door into the head jamb and sill. If the astragal gaps, cold air and water come in at the center of the pair.
Can a single front door be changed to double doors?
Yes, if the wall has room. The opening is widened, a new header sized for the span goes in, and the siding and inside wall are patched to the new width. We check what is beside the door — a window, a corner or an outlet — from your photos before we quote it.
Do you supply the double entry doors?
Yes. You pick the style, glass and color, we measure the opening and order the prehung pair, and the door unit is a line on the quote. If you already bought a pair, we install that too and price it as labor only.
Are double front doors less secure than a single door?
Not when they are set right. The inactive door is locked by flush bolts into the head jamb and sill, and the active door latches and deadbolts into it. The weak point is a frame out of square, where the bolts do not fully engage; setting the unit square fixes that, and a multipoint lock ties the pair together at three points.
How long does double front door replacement take?
About a day on site for a pair in a sound opening. Header or sill repair adds time, and widening a single door opening for a pair adds more. The wait before install is the door order, and we give you the expected date when it is placed.
