Which Side Should a Patio Door Slide? Handing a New Door for the Room
The old door slid on the wrong side for thirty years and everyone walked around the couch to use it.

Which side a patio door should slide is a handing decision made once, on the order, and it should follow the room: the sliding panel goes on the side people walk toward from the kitchen or hall, lands you at the deck stairs, and keeps the handle off the wall where furniture sits. JMB Builders works through that with you before ordering and installs the door across the Twin Cities metro. Priced per door, reply within one business day.
- Handing decided on the order, not on site
- Left or right as viewed from outside, per the manufacturer
- Follows the traffic path, furniture and deck layout

On a two-panel slider, one panel is fixed and one moves. Which one moves is called the handing, and the manufacturer builds it into the frame: the track, the rollers, the lock and the screen are all set for one side. It cannot be flipped after the door is made. When you replace a slider you can keep the handing you have or change it, and that choice is made on the order form, usually as left or right as viewed from outside. Get it wrong and you live with it.
The right side is the one the room tells you. Stand in the kitchen or hallway and walk to the door the way you do every day; the panel should open on the side you arrive at, so you do not cross the fixed panel to reach the handle. Outside, the opening should land you at the deck stairs or the grill, not behind the railing. The handle wall is where the open panel stacks, and furniture, a light switch or a thermostat on that side gets hidden every time the door is open. On a three-panel slider the center or an end panel can be the mover, which adds a choice.
We go through this at the in-home estimate with the door and the deck in front of us, or from your photos and a sketch of the room. Then the order says left or right in the manufacturer's convention, and we double-check it before it is placed. Options such as Pella, Andersen, ProVia, MI and Marvin each state handing their own way; we translate.

What you supply
- A photo from inside the room showing the door and the furniture around it, and one from the deck showing the stairs and grill
- Which side slides now, and whether that has ever bothered you
- Anything on the walls beside the door: switches, thermostat, outlets, a cabinet or a window
- Paint color for the new casing if you want it painted — quoted as its own line
What JMB supplies
- A handing recommendation for your room, and the reason for it, before the order
- The order written in the manufacturer's left/right convention and confirmed with you
- Measurement of the opening and the order for the slider and screen
- Removal and haul-away of the old patio door, frame and trim
- Sill pan, flashing tape, backer rod, low-expansion foam and exterior sealant
- Subfloor or framing repair at the sill when needed, quoted from the photos
- Interior casing and exterior trim; painting quoted as a separate line
- Photos of the finished door in your job folder
How it is priced: per door
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Two-panel vs three-panel slider, and which panel moves on a three-panel
- Frame material, color and glass package
- Moving a light switch or thermostat off the wall where the panel stacks, done by a licensed electrician
- Rot at the subfloor or framing once the old door is out
- Siding or masonry at the opening and how the exterior is trimmed
- Painting the new casing, quoted as a separate line
Handing does not change the price of the door. Send the room photo and the deck photo and we settle the side before anything is ordered.
How long it takes
One two-panel slider in a sound opening: most of a day on site. Handing is set at the factory, so it adds nothing on site; it only has to be right on the order.

Situations and options
Keep the current handing
The default when the old door never bothered anyone and the furniture and deck work with it. The new door drops into the same traffic pattern and the screen stacks where the old one did.
Flip the handing
The moving panel switches sides so the handle is where you arrive and the opening lands at the deck stairs. The one chance to fix a door that was ordered wrong when the house was built. No framing changes; it is a factory setting.
Three-panel: center or end mover
On a three-panel slider either end panel or the center can move, depending on the line. A center mover splits the view evenly and opens in the middle of the room; an end mover acts like a two-panel. Decided by the same traffic and furniture questions.
Hinged French pair instead
If no side works for a slider — a door in a tight corner, furniture on both sides — a hinged pair with one or both panels active sidesteps the question. Needs swing room inside or on the deck; we check that against the room.
Which Side Should a Patio Door Slide? Handing a New Door for the Room: questions, answered
How do you tell if a sliding door is left or right hand?
Stand outside facing the door. If the moving panel is on your right and slides left to open, most manufacturers call it a right-hand door; moving panel on the left that slides right is left-hand. Not every maker uses the same words, and some describe it from inside, so we always confirm with a sketch marked 'fixed' and 'slides' rather than trusting a letter on a form.
Can I change which side my patio door opens when I replace it?
Yes, and replacement is the only time you can. The handing is built into the frame at the factory, so a new door can be ordered the opposite of the old one with no framing changes. Tell us what bothered you about the old side and we set the new one to fix it. The screen moves with the operating panel, so it changes sides too.
Which side should the sliding panel be on?
The side you arrive at. Walk from the kitchen or hall to the door the way you do every day; the handle should be on that side so you do not cross the fixed panel to reach it. Outside, the opening should put you at the deck stairs or the grill. Then check the wall the open panel stacks against: a thermostat, switch or a cabinet there gets covered whenever the door is open.
Does handing affect the price of a sliding patio door?
No. Left or right is a factory setting with no cost difference on any line we order. The only time handing adds to the job is when the better side has a light switch or thermostat on the wall where the panel stacks and you want it moved, which is done by a licensed electrician and quoted as its own line.
Which panel should slide on a three panel patio door?
It depends on the room. A center mover opens in the middle, splits the view evenly and leaves both end panels fixed for furniture. An end mover works like a two-panel door and puts the opening at one side, which is better when the deck stairs are at that end. Not every line offers both, so tell us which you want before we pick the manufacturer.
Can the fixed and sliding panels be switched after the door is installed?
No. The track, the rollers, the lock keeper and the screen track are all set for one side when the door is built. Switching sides means a new door. That is why we settle handing from the room photos or at the in-home estimate and confirm it in writing before the order goes in, with a sketch so there is no left/right confusion.
