In a story-and-a-half house the upstairs rooms sit between two knee walls, and behind each one is a side attic that is outdoor-cold in January. The access door into it is usually a loose panel held with turn buttons, or a cut-down hollow-core door with no weatherstrip. Cold air pours around it all winter and warm, damp air goes into the attic, where it frosts on the roof boards.
The fix is a real door: an insulated slab or panel with rigid foam on the attic side, a jamb with a stop all the way around, weatherstrip that the door presses into, and a latch that pulls it tight. That can be a small exterior-grade prehung cut down to the opening, a ready-made insulated hatch, or a door built to the opening. The size is set by what has to fit through it, from holiday boxes to a person going in to check wiring.
The access door is one piece of a cold knee wall. If the wall itself is not insulated or the floor behind it is open to the rooms below, a tight door helps but does not finish the job. Knee wall insulation and built-in storage in the same space have their own pages.

How do I stop cold air coming through my knee wall door?
Replace the loose panel or hollow door with an insulated door that seals. It needs rigid foam on the attic side, a stop on all four sides with weatherstrip, and a latch that pulls it tight. Turn buttons on a plywood panel never seal.
What kind of door goes in an attic knee wall?
An insulated one. A small exterior-grade prehung cut down to size, a ready-made insulated hatch, or a door built to the opening with rigid foam on the back all work. A hollow-core interior door does not, because it has no insulation and no seal.
Can you make my knee wall access door bigger?
Yes. The knee wall is usually non-bearing framing, so the opening can be widened with a new header and jamb. We check for wiring and ductwork in the wall first from inside the attic.
Does a new knee wall door fix a cold upstairs bedroom?
It helps, and it is the cheapest part to fix. If the knee wall itself has little or no insulation, or the floor behind it is open to the rooms below, the room will still be cold. Insulating the knee wall and blocking the floor cavities finishes it.
Do you trim and paint the new knee wall door?
