A front door and storm door replaced together are ordered to fit each other: same opening, same hinge side, a handle that clears the deadbolt, and a storm door that suits the sun on that door. JMB Builders sets the entry door first, then hangs the storm door on the new brickmould the same day. Twin Cities metro, priced per door. - Priced per door: entry and storm on separate lines
- Both ordered after one in-person measure
- Hung the same day on new brickmould

A storm door hangs on the entry door's brickmould, so the two are really one job. Order them separately and the usual problems show up: the storm door handle hits the new lever or deadbolt, the storm hinges on the wrong side for how the entry door swings, or the brickmould on the new entry unit is too narrow or not flat enough for the storm door frame to mount to.
Ordering them together fixes that. At one measure we size the entry door, note its hinge side and hardware, and then pick a storm door in the same width and height with its handle set where it clears. Sun matters too. A full-glass storm door over a dark entry door on a south or west wall can trap a lot of heat between them, and some entry door makers warn about it in their care instructions. On those doors a storm door with a screen or a ventilating panel is often the better choice.
On install day the old storm door comes off, the entry door and frame come out, rot at the sill is repaired, and the new entry unit is set in a sill pan, flashed and trimmed. Once the brickmould is on and sealed, the storm door is mounted to it, with the closer, latch, wind chain and sweep adjusted. Both doors are working before the crew leaves, and the line-item quote shows each door separately.

How it is priced: per door
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Entry door material and glass: steel, fiberglass or wood
- Storm door style: full glass, full view with screen, retractable screen
- Sidelites or a transom on the entry unit
- Rot at the sill, jamb or subfloor
- Brickmould width needed for the storm door frame
- Lead time on each door depends on the brand and is written on the quote
Send a straight-on photo of both doors closed and one of the hinge side. We reply within one business day.
How long it takes
Usually one day for both: the entry door in the morning, the storm door hung once the brickmould is on. Lead time depends on the brand of each door and is written on the quote.

Situations and options
Full-view storm door
Interchangeable glass and screen panels. Shows off a new entry door. Worth checking against the entry door maker's guidance on a sunny wall.
Retractable-screen storm door
Glass that slides down with a built-in screen that rolls away. Good where you want air in spring and fall without swapping panels.
No storm door
Some new insulated entry doors are fine without one. We can leave the storm off and fill and paint the old mounting holes on the brickmould.
Front Door and Storm Door Replaced Together — Sized to Fit Each Other: questions, answered
Should I replace my storm door when I get a new front door?
If the storm door is old, yes, at the same time. It hangs on the entry door's brickmould, so ordering both together means the sizes, hinge side and handle position fit each other. Putting an old storm door on a new entry unit rarely lines up.
Will my storm door handle hit my new front door lock?
It can if the doors are ordered separately. When both are ordered together, the storm door handle position is checked against the entry door's lever and deadbolt so they clear each other. That check happens at the measure, before anything is ordered.
Can a storm door damage a new front door?
A full-glass storm door over a dark entry door in direct sun can trap heat between them, and some entry door makers warn about it in their care instructions. A storm door with a screen or a ventilating panel lets that heat out. The direction your door faces is part of choosing the storm door.
Can both doors be installed in one day?
Usually, yes. The entry door is set, flashed and trimmed first, and once the brickmould is on and sealed, the storm door is hung on it. Both are working before the crew leaves. Rot under the sill can push the storm door to the next morning.
Do I need a storm door with a new insulated front door?
Not always. A storm door adds a layer against wind and gives a screen for summer, but many people skip it on a new insulated door. It is a choice, and it is priced on its own line so you can decide.
Do the front door and storm door have to be the same brand?
No. They are often different makers. What matters is that the storm door is sized to the new entry opening, hinges on the right side and clears the entry hardware, and that is checked when both are ordered together.
