A decorative glass front door replacement is a new prehung entry door ordered with the glass built in: leaded, beveled, textured or clear insulated glass in a full, three-quarter, half or oval lite, with sidelites and a transom in the same pattern when the entry has them. JMB Builders supplies and installs them across the Twin Cities metro. Priced per door, quoted from photos, and we reply within one business day.
- Priced per door, door supplied with glass
- Leaded, beveled, textured or clear insulated glass
- Sidelites and transom ordered in the same pattern

Decorative glass is the part of a front door people remember. Beveled glass that throws color on the foyer floor at sunset, leaded glass with a camed pattern, textured glass that glows but hides the hallway, or a plain clear oval in a six-panel door. When the glass is ordered with a new door, it comes as a sealed insulated unit set in a frame that matches the door, and the sidelites and transom are ordered in the same pattern so the whole entry reads as one. That is a different job from putting a new glass kit into the door you have, which has its own page.
The choices are size, pattern, privacy and glass package. Size runs from a small oval or a half-moon up to a full lite that is almost all glass. Pattern is the maker's catalog, from options such as Therma-Tru, ProVia, Masonite, JELD-WEN or Pella, with the caming in zinc, brass, nickel or black. Privacy is rated on a scale by most makers, from clear to fully obscured, and that number matters when the door opens straight into the living room. The glass package is the insulated unit itself: double or triple pane, low-E coating, and the spacer, which in this climate decides whether the inside of the glass frosts on a cold morning.
The install is the standard entry door job: old unit out, sill checked, sill pan and flashing tape lapped to the housewrap, frame set plumb, low-expansion foam, sealant, trim inside and out. The glass frames on a fiberglass or steel door are plastic or composite and are painted or stained with the door, so finishing is planned with the glass in mind. Painting or staining is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and finish it yourself.

How it is priced: per door
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Glass size: a small oval vs. a full lite
- Pattern complexity and caming metal: clear or textured vs. leaded and beveled
- Sidelites and a transom in the same pattern
- Glass package: double or triple pane, low-E and spacer type
- Fiberglass vs. steel vs. wood door under the glass
- Rot at the old sill or frame
- Painting or staining, quoted as a separate line
Send photos of the door and any sidelites from outside and inside, and tell us what room the door opens into so we can suggest a privacy level.
How long it takes

Situations and options
Beveled clear glass
Clear panes with ground bevels on the edges, joined with caming. Throws color in direct sun and gives the least privacy. The traditional choice on colonials and two stories with a deep foyer.
Leaded textured glass
Textured or seeded panes in a camed pattern, in zinc, brass, nickel or black. More privacy than clear bevels, with the same patterned look from the street.
Textured full lite, no caming
One large pane of rain, reed or glue-chip glass with no pattern bars. A plainer look for craftsman, modern and farmhouse doors, with light and privacy at the same time.
Oval or half-moon in a panel door
A small decorative unit set in a six-panel or two-panel door. The least glass, the most insulation, and the way to get a leaded look on a traditional door without a full lite.
Decorative Glass Front Door Replacement — New Door, Leaded or Beveled: questions, answered
Is it better to replace the whole door or just the glass?
If the door and frame are sound and you only want new glass, a glass insert kit into the existing slab is the smaller job and has its own page. If the door is old, drafty, dented or the frame has rot, a new prehung door with the glass built in gets you a sealed insulated unit, a new frame and sill pan, and sidelites that match. This page is the whole-door route.
Does decorative glass make a front door colder?
Glass insulates less than a foam-core door panel, so more glass means more heat loss, but modern door glass is a sealed insulated unit with low-E coating and a warm-edge spacer. A half lite in a fiberglass door is a small part of the wall. What shows up in Minnesota is frost on the inside edge of a cheap spacer on a cold morning, so the glass package matters more than the amount of glass.
What is the privacy rating on door glass?
Most door makers rate each glass design from clear to fully obscured on a numbered scale. Clear beveled glass is at the low end: you can see shapes and faces through it. Textured and leaded patterns sit in the middle. Rain, reed and frosted glass are near the top. Pick by what the door opens into: a foyer with a second door can take clear glass; a door straight into the living room usually wants more.
Can the sidelites and transom match the door glass?
Yes. The pattern, caming metal and privacy level are ordered the same across the door, sidelites and transom, as one unit when the opening allows it. If you keep existing sidelites and replace only the door, send a photo of the sidelite glass and we will find the closest pattern in the current catalog, since old patterns are often discontinued.
What caming finish should I pick for leaded glass?
Caming is the metal strip between the glass pieces. Zinc and nickel read silver and go with nickel or chrome hardware. Brass reads gold and goes with brass hardware. Black caming goes with matte black hardware and black-framed windows. Match it to the handleset and the window grilles and it disappears into the look.
How long does a door with decorative glass take to get?
Longer than a plain door, because the glass unit is built to the order and then set in the door at the factory. We give you the maker's date when the order is placed and schedule the install for the week it arrives. Painting or staining, if we do it, is planned around that date.
