As a trim carpenter in St. Cloud, MN, JMB Builders installs baseboard, shoe, casing and crown across the city's three eras of houses: century-old homes near downtown and the university, mid-century neighborhoods, and 1990s-and-newer builds on the south side. Base is priced per linear foot and casing per opening, with miters glued and inside corners coped. Send photos and we reply within one business day, or ask for a free in-home estimate.
- Base per linear foot, casing per opening
- Older profiles blended, builder trim upgraded
- Jobs grouped on our Highway 10 trips

St. Cloud trim work depends on when the house was built. The century-old homes near downtown and the university often have wide wood casing, tall base and stained doors, and a remodel or a window change leaves gaps that need trim that looks original. Mid-century houses tend to have simple ranch casing and base, easy to extend and worth upgrading. The 1990s-and-newer houses on the south side have narrow builder trim and drywall-return windows.
We blend into older millwork where it is worth keeping and replace it where it is not. Upgrades in newer homes usually mean taller base, real casing with a stool and apron, and crown in the main rooms. Central Minnesota winters are dry and hard on wood, so miters are glued as well as nailed, and stain-grade stock sits in the house before it is cut.
St. Cloud is the far end of our Highway 10 run from Zimmerman. Trim jobs there are booked with other work in the area, Sartell and Sauk Rapids included, so a full house gets back-to-back days. Painting is quoted as its own line, or the trim is left primed and caulked for you to paint.

- Coped inside corners, glued miters, base scribed to the floor
- Back band or built-up profiles where an older house calls for it
- Filler, caulk and primer on new paint-grade trim
- Photos of the finished rooms in your job folder
- Painting or staining, quoted as its own line
How it is priced: per linear foot
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Footage of base and the number of openings to case
- Blending with century-old profiles vs. installing a stock upgrade
- Stain-grade oak or pine vs. paint-grade MDF and finger-jointed pine
- Crown, and how far out of level the ceilings are
- Plaster walls that crack when old trim comes off
- Grouping the work with other jobs on a Highway 10 trip
A doorway photo of each room, a close-up of the trim with a tape next to it, and a door and window count are enough to price it.
How long it takes
A room of base and casing: most of a day. A full main floor: two to three days. Older homes with built-up casing and plaster take longer per opening.

Trim Carpenter in St. Cloud, MN: questions, answered
Do you take trim jobs in St. Cloud, or only window and door replacements?
Both. Base, casing, crown, wainscoting and interior doors are booked the same way as our window work up there. Because St. Cloud is a longer drive from Zimmerman, we plan the days back to back and pair them with other jobs in the area.
Can you match the wide casing in an older St. Cloud house near downtown?
Often, by running a stock casing with a back band applied around its outer edge, which is how a lot of trim from that era was built up. Where the profile is more unusual, we show you the closest options next to a sample before anything is ordered. If nothing stocked or built up comes close, we say so before any trim is ordered.
What trim works best on drywall-return windows in a newer home?
Casing on all four sides with a stool and apron at the bottom, or picture-frame casing with no stool. Both need jamb extensions first, to bring the window frame out flush with the drywall. The stool and apron look is more traditional; picture-frame casing is cleaner.
Does new trim need a permit in St. Cloud?
Trim swapped on its own is cosmetic, and most cities do not require a permit for it. When the trim is part of a basement finish or a remodel, that larger project usually needs one. We check with the City of St. Cloud building department and pull the permit when the project calls for it.
Why does my trim crack open at the miters every winter?
Dry winter air shrinks wood, and a miter that was only nailed opens as the two pieces pull apart. Glue in the miter and pin nails across the joint keep it closed. Indoor humidity that swings hard between seasons makes it worse, and a humidifier on the furnace helps.
What does trim carpentry in St. Cloud cost to quote?
Baseboard is priced per linear foot and casing per opening, with crown by the foot as well. The profile, wood species, removal of old trim and the condition of the walls move the number. Send photos of each room, or ask for a free in-home estimate if you would rather we measure.
