Interior door installation in St. Cloud, MN by JMB Builders means refitting old doors or hanging new slabs in the original jambs of century-old and mid-century homes, and setting prehung doors plumb in newer houses, closet bifolds and bypass doors included. Each door is shimmed at the hinges and strike, cased and fitted with hardware. Priced per door, with a lower per-door cost for several on one trip. Send photos and we reply within one business day.

  • Priced per door
  • Slab, prehung, bifold or bypass
  • Out-of-square frames fixed before hanging

St. Cloud has interior doors from every decade. Near downtown and the university, many homes still have their original solid wood doors, with mortised hardware and jambs that have moved as the house settled. Mid-century houses often have flush slab doors, some solid and some hollow. Newer homes on the south side have molded hollow-core doors and bifold closet doors on light tracks.

The right fix depends on what you have. A sound old door can usually be rehung, or a new slab fitted to its jamb so the original casing stays. Worn-out builder doors are better replaced as prehung units, and bifolds that keep falling off the track can become bypass doors or a swinging pair. Every opening is checked for square first, because a door hung in a racked frame will never latch right.

New doors go in primed or prefinished. Painting or staining is quoted separately, or you paint them yourself.

What JMB supplies

  • Old doors and jambs removed and hauled away
  • Slabs hinged, bored and planed to fit an existing jamb
  • Prehung doors shimmed behind hinges and strike and fastened through the shims
  • Bifold and bypass tracks set level so the doors stay on
  • Casing matched to the house
  • Photos of the finished doors in your job folder
  • Painting or staining, quoted as its own line

How it is priced: per door

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Number of doors on the trip
  • Slab in an existing jamb vs. a full prehung unit
  • Hollow-core, solid-core, panel or French door
  • Closet bifolds or bypass doors vs. swinging doors
  • Out-of-square frames in older homes that need work before hanging
  • New hardware vs. reusing the old, including old mortise locks

Photograph each door closed, the gap at the top and on the latch side, and the hinges. Note any that rub or will not latch.

How long it takes

Two to four prehung doors a day. Slab fits and older frames take longer. A house full of doors is booked as consecutive days on one trip up Highway 10.

Situations and options

Refit an old door

Hinges tightened or reset, the strike moved, the door planed where it rubs. Keeps the original door and casing in a century-old house.

New slab, old jamb

A new door slab mortised and bored to fit the existing frame and casing. Useful when the frame is sound but the door is cracked or warped.

Prehung replacement

Door, jamb and stops as one unit. The usual choice for builder doors in newer homes, often hollow-core swapped for solid-core.

Closet doors

Bifold, bypass or a swinging pair, with tracks set level and floor guides fastened so the doors stay put.

Interior Door Installation in St. Cloud, MN: questions, answered

Can you fix an old interior door that drags instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. Dragging and unlatched doors in older St. Cloud houses usually come from loose hinge screws, a frame that has shifted, or paint built up on the edges. Long screws into the framing behind the top hinge, a planed edge and a moved strike fix most of them. We look at photos and tell you whether a refit or a new door makes more sense.

Can old mortise lock hardware be reused on a new door?

Sometimes. If the lock body still works, it can stay on the original door. A new slab can be mortised for an old lock, but it takes more time than boring for a modern latch, and parts for old locks can be hard to find. We tell you which way makes sense once we see the hardware.

Why do my bifold closet doors keep coming off the track?

The top pivot and guide ride in a light track, and a track that is not level or a bottom pivot bracket that has worked loose lets the doors jump out. Resetting the track and pivots fixes most of them. If they keep failing, bypass doors or a swinging pair are sturdier.

Do you install interior doors I bought myself in St. Cloud?

Yes, for labor only. Send a photo of the label and the opening before you buy and we check the size and handing. Doors from a lumberyard or a big-box store go in the same way as doors we order.

Are solid-core doors worth it in a newer home?

If the builder doors are being replaced anyway, they are for most people. Solid-core doors cut noise between bedrooms and a home office, close with weight, and hold up better to bumps. They cost more per door than hollow-core, and the quote shows the difference line by line.
