Interior door installation in Monticello, MN covers two very different houses: older in-town homes where a new slab has to be fitted to an out-of-square opening, and 1990s-and-newer homes swapping hollow-core doors for solid-core. JMB Builders fits slabs, sets prehung units, cases them to match, and adjusts hardware until each door latches. Priced per door. Email photos for a reply within one business day, or ask for a free in-home estimate.

  • Priced per door
  • Slabs fitted to old, out-of-square frames
  • Solid-core swaps in newer homes

In Monticello's older river-town homes, the doorways have moved with the house. Floors slope, heads are out of level and the old jambs have been painted or stained many times. A prehung door from the store is square, and the opening is not, so dropping one in usually means new casing and a gap that shows. Often the better job is to keep the old jamb and its stained casing and fit a new slab to it: scribed to the head, planed to the latch side, and the hinges mortised to line up with the old ones.

In the newer homes along I-94 the jambs are square and the doors are the problem: hollow-core slabs that dent and do not block sound. Those swaps go fast. Many owners there go solid-core on bedrooms and the office, and leave closets for later.

Many of the doors we hang here are slabs the owner has had delivered or bought at Menards or Home Depot. Send the label first and we check the size against your opening. We hang doors in Big Lake and Otsego as well.

Three photos and a sentence is enough: a reply within one business day, or ask for a free in-home estimate. Or text the photos to 763-204-2099.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • A photo of each opening with the door open, and a count
  • The doors, if you bought them, or the style and core so we can quote them
  • Hinges and knobs or levers, or tell us to reuse the old hardware
  • For stained trim, whether the new door gets stained to match
  • Painting or staining is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself

What JMB supplies

  • Old doors removed and hauled away
  • Slabs scribed and planed to the opening, hinges mortised to the old locations
  • Lockset and latch bored, strike moved where the old one does not line up
  • Prehung units set plumb with shims when the frame is replaced
  • Casing matched to the room, stained or paint-grade
  • Photos of the finished doors in your job folder

How it is priced: per door

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Slab fitted to an old frame vs. a new prehung unit
  • How far out of square the opening is
  • Matching old hinge locations and reusing antique hardware
  • Solid-core, hollow-core, panel or glass door
  • Stain-grade door and casing vs. paint-grade
  • Number of doors done in one visit

For older homes, send a photo of the full doorway and a close-up of the hinges and latch. For newer homes, a photo per door and a count is enough.

How long it takes

A slab fitted to an old out-of-square frame: a few hours each. Prehung swaps in a newer home: two to four a day.

Situations and options

New slab in an old frame

The old jamb and stained casing stay; the new slab is scribed and planed to fit the opening as it is.

Prehung replacement

Old door and jamb out, a new prehung unit set plumb and cased. Best when the old jamb is damaged.

Hollow-core to solid-core

The common swap in Monticello's 1990s and newer homes, slab-only when the frames are square.

Delivered or big-box doors hung

Slabs or prehung doors you bought yourself, checked against the opening and installed labor-only.

Interior Door Installation in Monticello, MN: questions, answered

Can you fit a new door into an old door frame?

Yes. In older Monticello homes we often keep the original jamb and casing and fit a new slab to it. The slab is scribed to the head, planed on the latch side, and the hinges are mortised to match the old locations so the frame is not cut up.

Why won't a store-bought prehung door fit my older house?

A prehung unit is square and the opening in an older house usually is not, after decades of settling. Forcing it in leaves uneven gaps and casing that does not sit flat. Fitting a slab to the old frame, or reframing the opening, gives a better result.

Can I reuse my old door hardware?

Often, yes. Old knobs, plates and hinges can go on a new slab if the bore and the hinge size line up. We check the hardware in your photos and tell you if it needs an adapter or a different bore.

Do I need a permit to replace interior doors in Monticello?

Replacing a door in its existing opening is finish work. Reframing an opening or cutting a new one changes the wall, and most cities require a permit for that. In that case we check with the City of Monticello building department and pull it.

Can you hang doors I bought at Menards or Home Depot?

Yes. Send the label or receipt before you pick them up so we can check the size and swing against your openings. We install them labor-only and case them to match.

How much does it cost to install an interior door in Monticello?

Doors are priced per door. Fitting a slab to an old frame, the door type, stain-grade work and how many doors go in at once move the number. Email us photos and we reply within one business day.
