Trim Carpenter in Monticello, MN

Monticello has an old river-town core and newer subdivisions along I-94, and the trim job is different in each.

A trim carpenter in Monticello, MN works on two kinds of houses. In the older in-town homes it is wide stained casing and plinth blocks that need matching after a window or door is replaced. In the newer I-94 neighborhoods it is crown, taller base and recasing builder trim. JMB Builders does both. Casing is priced per opening, base and crown per linear foot. Send pictures; we reply within one business day.

  • Casing per opening, base and crown per foot
  • Stained trim matched in older homes
  • Upgrades in newer neighborhoods

Older homes in Monticello's river-town core often still have their original trim: wide flat or fluted casing, plinth blocks at the bottom of the door casing, a deep base, and all of it stained. When a window or door in one of those houses is replaced, the new trim has to sit next to decades of aged finish without looking patched in.

That is a matching job. We take a profile off a piece that is coming out, find the closest stock casing and base or build up a profile from more than one piece, and pick a species that will take stain close to the old wood. Stain is mixed and tested on an offcut before it goes on the wall. If a profile cannot be matched closely enough, we tell you before we cut, and you can choose to recase the whole room instead.

In the newer neighborhoods along I-94 the work is upgrades: crown in the main rooms, taller base, wider casing on windows and doors, and cased openings where a doorway is just drywall. We also trim out windows that another company replaced and left unfinished. Big Lake and Buffalo are a short drive, and we trim houses there too.

Get a written quote for this job

Three photos and a sentence is enough: a reply within one business day, or ask for a free in-home estimate. Or text the photos to 763-204-2099.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • Photos of the room and close-ups of the casing, base and any plinth blocks you want matched
  • A loose piece of the old trim if one is coming out anyway
  • Paint-grade or stain-grade, and the stain or paint you want
  • Painting or staining is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself

What JMB supplies

  • Old trim removed carefully where it is being reused or matched
  • Casing, base, plinth blocks and stool and apron in the closest matching profile and species
  • A stain sample on an offcut for your approval when the trim is stained
  • Jamb extensions where a new window sits at a different depth than the old one
  • Crown, taller base and recased openings in newer homes
  • Nail holes filled and joints tight, primed or ready for stain
  • Photos of the finished work in your job folder

How it is priced: per opening

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Number of window and door openings to case
  • Matching an old profile vs. a stock profile
  • Stain-grade wood and staining vs. paint-grade
  • Plinth blocks, head blocks or a built-up head casing
  • Linear feet of base and crown
  • Walls and floors out of plumb in an older house

Send a close-up of the casing with a tape measure across its width, and a photo of the base. For stained trim, a photo in daylight helps us judge the color.

How long it takes

Casing one or two openings to match old trim: a day, plus stain time. A room of new crown and base in a newer home: one to two days.

Trim Carpenter in Monticello, MN: questions, answered

Can you match the old stained trim in my Monticello house?

In most cases, closely. We match the width and profile with stock pieces or a built-up profile, use a wood that takes stain like the original, and test the stain on an offcut first. Old finish has aged, so a perfect match is not always possible; if it is not close enough, we tell you before we cut.

Do you put plinth blocks back after a door is replaced?

Yes. Plinth blocks sit at the bottom of the door casing where the base meets it, and many older Monticello homes have them. We reuse the originals when they come off cleanly, or install new blocks sized to the casing and base.

My windows were replaced but the inside trim was never finished. Can you finish it?

Yes. We build the jamb extensions to the new window depth and install casing, stool and apron, matched to the rest of the house. It does not matter who installed the windows.

Do I need a permit for trim work in Monticello?

Trim alone is finish work. Replacing a window or door, changing an opening or adding wiring is different, and most cities require a permit for that work. When a job includes it, we check with the City of Monticello building department and pull the permit.

What trim upgrades are common in newer Monticello homes?

Crown in the living room and kitchen, a taller base, wider casing on windows and doors, and casing drywall-wrapped openings. Board and batten walls and solid-core interior doors often go on the same quote.

How is trim carpentry priced in Monticello?

Casing is priced per window or door opening, and base and crown per linear foot. Matching an old profile, stain-grade wood and plinth blocks add to it. We reply to photos within one business day, and free in-home estimates are on offer too.
