Interior door installation in Anoka, MN: JMB Builders hangs prehung doors and fits new slabs into existing jambs, including the out-of-square openings common in the city's early-1900s homes. Each door is shimmed at the hinges and strike, margins are kept even, and the casing is matched to the room. Priced per door. Send photos and we reply within one business day, or set up a free in-home estimate.

  • Slabs fitted to old jambs, or prehung

Doors in Anoka's older in-town homes have lived through a century of settling. Heads slope, jambs lean, and the original slab has been planed so many times it no longer closes clean. A prehung unit from the store is square; the opening is not. Something has to give, and it should be the shims behind the jamb, not the casing line.

In those houses we often keep the original jamb and stained casing and fit a new slab to them: scribe it to the opening, cut the hinge mortises to line up with the old ones, bore for the lockset and plane the edges for an even gap. When a jamb is split or too far out, a prehung goes in and the new casing is fitted to blend with the trim around it.

The postwar and 1970s–80s houses around town are the quick ones: hollow-core slabs, bifolds at the closets and jambs that are mostly square. Swapping them for prehung or solid-core doors goes fast and changes how the house sounds. We hang doors in nearby Coon Rapids and Andover as well.

What you supply

  • The doors, prehung or slab, or the style you want and we put them on the quote
  • A photo of each opening and the door label or receipt if you already bought them
  • Hinges and knobs or levers if the doors come without them; old hardware can often be reused
  • Your stain or paint color, or leave the doors primed and finish them yourself

What JMB supplies

  • Slab fitting: scribing, planing, hinge mortises and the lockset bore
  • Prehung units shimmed plumb at the hinges and strike in out-of-square openings
  • Casing matched to the room, stain-grade or paint-grade
  • Stops and strike plates adjusted so every door latches
  • Removal and haul-away of the old doors and jambs
  • Staining or painting the new doors when you want it, quoted as its own line
  • Photos of the hung doors in your job folder

How it is priced: per door

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • A slab fitted to an existing jamb vs. a new prehung unit
  • How far out of square the opening has moved
  • Hollow-core, solid-core, panel or glass styles
  • Reusing old hinges and knobs vs. new hardware
  • Casing that has to blend with stained original trim
  • How many doors are done in the same visit

Send a photo of each door closed, the gap at the top, and the hardware. Tell us which jambs you want to keep.

How long it takes

Prehung doors in a postwar house: two to four a day. Slabs fitted to old jambs: one or two a day, depending on how far the openings have moved.

Situations and options

New slab in the original jamb

Keeps the old jamb and stained casing. The new slab is scribed to the opening, mortised to the existing hinge locations and planed for an even gap.

Prehung replacement

New door and jamb together, shimmed plumb in an opening that is not. The right call when the jamb is split or the head has dropped too far.

Hollow-core to solid-core

The common swap in postwar and 1970s–80s houses. Solid-core doors cut sound between bedrooms and close with a heavier, quieter feel.

French doors between rooms

A pair of glass doors into a den or dining room. Both leaves are hung to meet evenly in the middle, with an astragal and ball catch or flush bolt.

Interior Door Installation in Anoka, MN: questions, answered

Can you fit a new door into the old jamb in my Anoka house?

Yes, when the jamb is sound. We scribe the new slab to the opening, cut the hinge mortises to match the old locations, bore for the lockset and plane the edges for an even gap. It keeps the original jamb and casing in place.

Why won't a store-bought prehung door fit my older home's opening?

Prehung doors are built square and to standard sizes. Openings in early-1900s homes have usually settled out of square, and some were never a standard size. We either shim the prehung plumb inside the opening or fit a slab to the old jamb, whichever leaves the better casing line.

Can I reuse my old door knobs on a new door?

Often, yes. Older mortise locks need a pocket cut into the door edge instead of a standard round bore, which takes longer and is priced that way. Newer tubular knobs move over easily when the backset matches.

Are solid-core doors worth it in a 1970s house?

For bedrooms and a home office, most people notice the difference right away: less sound through the door and a heavier close. Closets and a laundry can stay hollow-core to keep the cost down. We quote both so you can mix them.

How many interior doors can you hang in a day?

Prehung doors in square openings run two to four a day. Fitting new slabs to old jambs in an early-1900s house is slower, often one or two a day. A whole-house swap is quoted per door with the visit count spelled out.

Do you also replace interior doors in Coon Rapids and Andover?
