A trim carpenter in Anoka, MN from JMB Builders installs window and door casing, baseboard, crown and picture rail: stain-grade wood for the city's early-1900s homes, paint-grade for its postwar and 1970s–80s blocks. Inside corners are coped and base is scribed to the floor. Baseboard is priced per linear foot and casing per opening. Send photos and we reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.
- Base per linear foot, casing per opening

Anoka housing runs from the 1880s to the 2000s, and trim work here splits along the same line. In-town, early-1900s homes still carry stained casing, tall baseboard and picture rail. When one window or door is replaced, or a wall gets opened, the new trim has to sit next to wood that has been darkening for a century. Tearing all of it out is rarely the right call.
In those houses we start by measuring what is there: casing width and thickness, base height, the reveal at the jamb and the species. We look for a stock or lumberyard profile that lines up with the original, sometimes two moldings built up together, and stain a test board before anything is nailed. If nothing available comes close, you hear that before the quote, not after install day.
In the postwar and 1970s–80s neighborhoods the job is simpler: narrow casing and low base come off, and taller paint-grade profiles go on, coped and scribed. When trim is part of a bigger remodel that needs a permit, we check with the City of Anoka building department. We run trim in nearby Ramsey and Champlin too.

What you supply
- A close-up photo of the existing casing and base, with a tape measure across the width
- Stain-grade or paint-grade, and your stain or paint color
- A spare piece of the old trim if one turns up in the garage or basement
- Trim you already bought, with the footage and a photo of the label
What JMB supplies
- Casing, base, shoe, crown and picture rail in oak, fir, poplar, pine or primed MDF
- Old trim pulled with a flat bar and saved when you want it reused
- Jamb extensions, stool and apron at replaced windows
- Coped inside corners, glued miters, base scribed to the floor
- Filler and paintable caulk on paint-grade work
- Staining or painting when you want it, quoted as its own line
- Haul-away of cutoffs and photos of the finished rooms in your job folder
How it is priced: per linear foot
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Linear footage of base and the number of window and door openings
- Stain-grade hardwood vs. paint-grade pine or MDF
- How close a stock profile comes to the original, and whether two moldings are built up into one
- Resetting saved original trim vs. installing new material
- Plaster walls and settled floors that take scribing and shimming
- Staining or painting, quoted as a separate line
Send one photo per room from the doorway, a close-up of the casing and base, and the count of windows and doors.
How long it takes
One room of base and casing: about a day. A main floor of stain-grade trim in an older Anoka house: three to five days. Paint-grade in a rambler goes faster.

Situations and options
Stain-grade trim in early-1900s homes
New casing, base and picture rail in a species close to the original, stained to blend. A test board is stained and approved before the walls are touched.
Patching in after a window or door swap
Only the openings that changed get new trim. The rest of the room stays original, and the new casing is fitted to the old reveals and base.
Full trim update in a postwar or 1970s–80s house
Narrow casing and low base out, taller paint-grade profiles in, room by room or the whole floor at once so every line matches.
Crown and picture rail
Crown in the living or dining room, or picture rail set at the height the house had, so art hangs from hooks instead of nails in the plaster.
Trim Carpenter in Anoka, MN: questions, answered
Can you blend new trim with the original stained casing in my old Anoka house?
Usually, yes. We measure the casing and base, find the closest stock or lumberyard profile in a matching species, and stain a test board for you to approve. Where two moldings built up together get closer than one, we do that. If nothing available is close enough, we tell you before you commit.
Do I have to replace all the trim if I only replace two windows?
No. In an older house we usually trim only the openings that changed and fit the new casing to the old reveals and base. Replacing a whole room makes sense when the old trim is split, badly painted over, or already mismatched.
Is stain-grade trim more work than painted trim?
Yes. Stained wood shows every gap and filler spot, so joints have to close tight without caulk to hide them, and the grain has to sit right next to the old wood. Paint-grade pine or MDF can be filled and caulked. That difference shows in the per-foot price.
What trim suits a 1970s rambler in Anoka?
Most ramblers of that era have narrow casing and a low base. A taller base and a wider flat or simple-profile casing in primed pine or MDF change the rooms without fighting the house. We show you sample profiles so you can pick the height before anything is cut.
Can you install trim on old plaster walls?
Yes. Plaster walls are rarely flat, so base is scribed and casing is shimmed or back-cut to sit tight. We nail into the framing behind the plaster, not the plaster itself, and predrill hardwood so it does not split.
Do you do trim carpentry in Ramsey and Champlin too?
Yes. JMB Builders is based in Zimmerman and does trim carpentry in Anoka, Ramsey, Champlin, Andover and across the north metro. Send photos from any of them and we reply within one business day, or we set up a free in-home estimate.
