A trim carpenter in Buffalo, MN works across two kinds of houses: early-1900s homes in town with stained casing and baseboard worth matching, and 1990s–2010s subdivisions with thin builder trim worth replacing. JMB Builders runs base, casing and crown, copes the inside corners and scribes base to the floor. Baseboard is priced per linear foot, casing per opening. Send photos or book a free in-home estimate.
- Base per linear foot, casing per opening
- Old stained profiles matched where we can
- Inside corners coped, base scribed to floors

A lot of Buffalo houses near the lakes have been updated one room at a time. New flooring in the kitchen, a remodeled bath, a basement finished twenty years after the rest, and each one got whatever trim was on the shelf that year. The result is three base heights and two casing styles in one house. Bringing it back into line usually means picking one profile and running it through the main floor, and matching the stain where some of the old wood is staying.
The early-1900s homes in the older blocks have the opposite problem. The original stained casing and baseboard are worth keeping, but a window swap or a patched wall left a gap where a piece is missing. We match the profile from stock where one is close, or build it up from two pieces, and stain it to sit with the old wood. The 1990s to 2010s subdivisions mostly have thin painted builder trim; taller base, wider casing and crown in the living areas change those rooms the most.
Basement finishes are the other common call: doors cased, base run around every room, and the egress window trimmed. We were installing in Buffalo this June and quote the town the same as anywhere else we work. Stain or paint is its own line on the quote; you can also take the trim primed and caulked and finish it yourself.

What you supply
- Room-by-room photos taken from the doorway, plus a close-up of the trim you have
- A rough count of windows and doors and the room sizes
- Which old trim stays and which goes
- The profile you like, or a short piece of the old trim to match
What JMB supplies
- Base, shoe, casing and crown in primed MDF, finger-jointed pine or stain-grade wood
- Old trim removed and hauled away where it is being replaced
- Every inside corner coped and every outside miter glued, base scribed to uneven floors
- Jamb extensions, and a stool and apron where a window calls for them
- Profile matched from stock or built up from two pieces where the old trim stays
- Staining or painting, priced as a separate line if you want it
- Photos of the finished rooms in your job folder
How it is priced: per linear foot
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Linear feet of base and crown, and the count of window and door openings
- Matching an old stained profile vs. a new stock profile throughout
- Paint-grade vs. stain-grade material
- Removing and hauling the old trim
- Floors and walls that need heavy scribing, common in older homes
Send a photo of each room, a close-up of the trim you want matched, and how many windows and doors are in the job.
How long it takes
Base after new flooring in one room: a few hours. Base and casing through a whole main floor: about two to three days. Whole-house trim, or matched stain-grade work, takes longer.

Trim Carpenter in Buffalo, MN: questions, answered
Can you match the stained trim in an old Buffalo house?
Most of the time. We look for a stock profile that is close and, when there is none, build the profile up from two pieces. The new wood is stained on a test piece first so it sits with the old finish. Send a close-up photo of the trim with a tape measure across it.
My trim is different in every room. Can you make it consistent?
Yes. We pick one base height and one casing profile with you and run it through the rooms you want changed. Rooms that stay as they are get a clean transition at the doorway. This is a common job in houses that were remodeled a room at a time.
How is trim carpentry priced?
Base and crown go by the linear foot; each cased window or door is priced as one opening. Material, how much old trim comes out, and how much scribing the floors need move the number. There are no prices on this site; photos of each room get a reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.
Do you trim out finished basements in Buffalo?
Yes. Once the drywall is primed we hang and case the doors, trim the egress window, run base around every room and finish the closets. Put the trim in after the carpet pad is down or before, and we set the base height to suit.
Does new trim need a permit?
Replacing trim on existing walls is not usually work a city permits. A finished basement as a whole often is, and that permit belongs to the basement project. We check with the City of Buffalo building department when a job goes past trim.
Do you do trim work in Delano and Annandale too?
Yes. We are based in Zimmerman and do trim in Buffalo, Delano, Annandale and across the Twin Cities metro. Photos of a couple of rooms get a reply within one business day; for a whole house, a free in-home estimate often makes more sense.
