Trim Carpenter in Plymouth, MN
In Plymouth the trim is often good enough to keep. The job is making new pieces disappear into it, or taking a 1990s house up a step.

A trim carpenter in Plymouth, MN is usually doing one of two jobs: matching the stained casing and base in a 1960s–70s lake-area home after a window or door change, or replacing the trim in a 1990s–2000s two-story with taller profiles and crown. JMB Builders does both, stain-grade or paint-grade. Baseboard is priced per linear foot and casing per opening; send photos and we reply within one business day.
- Baseboard per linear foot, casing per opening
- Stain-grade matching or paint-grade upgrade
- Coped corners, scribed to the floor

Plymouth homes tend to start with better trim than most of the metro. In the 1960s and 70s houses around Medicine Lake, oak or birch casing and base were stained, not painted, and a lot of it is still in good shape. When a window or a door is replaced, the trim around it has to match the rest of the room, in species, profile and color.
Matching stained trim is slower than painted work. We find a stock profile that matches or build one up from two pieces, pick the same species, and test the stain on an offcut against the old trim in the room's light before anything goes on the wall. Where one wall is new and the next is original, the joint is placed at a corner or a door so the eye does not catch it.
The 1990s and 2000s two-stories on the west side get the other treatment: the original base and casing are replaced with taller profiles, crown goes into the main rooms, and the trim is usually painted. We have installed in Plymouth three times since April, and the same crew works next door in New Hope and Golden Valley.

- Profiles matched from stock or built up from two pieces
- Stain samples on offcuts, checked against the old trim on site
- Removal and haul-away of the trim being replaced

How it is priced: per linear foot
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Linear feet of base and number of window and door openings
- Stain-grade species and matching vs. paint-grade
- A profile that has to be built up from two pieces
- Crown in the main rooms and the number of corners
- Keeping and blending old trim vs. replacing a whole room
For matching, send a close-up of the trim in daylight and a photo of the back of a loose piece if you can get one off. For an upgrade, one photo per room is enough.
How long it takes
Trim around one or two replaced windows matched to stained trim: a day, plus stain time. A main floor of new base, casing and crown in a two-story: three to five days.

Trim Carpenter in Plymouth, MN: questions, answered
Can you match the stained oak trim in my Plymouth house?
In most cases, yes. We find the closest stock profile or build it up from two pieces, use the same species, and test the stain on offcuts against your trim in the room before it goes up. Old stained trim has aged, so matching takes a sample or two.
Should I paint the stained trim or keep it?
That is your call, and both are common in Plymouth. If the wood is in good shape and you like it, keep it and match new pieces to it. If you want a lighter house, painting the existing trim is less work than replacing it, unless you also want taller profiles.
What does a trim upgrade look like in a 1990s Plymouth two-story?
Usually taller baseboard, wider casing at doors and windows, and crown in the main rooms, painted. Some owners add wainscoting in the dining room or board and batten in the mudroom in the same job. It is done room by room or by floor.
Do I need a permit for trim work in Plymouth?
Base, casing and crown are finish work. If a job widens a doorway or adds wiring, most cities require a permit; we check with the City of Plymouth building department and pull it when needed.
Do you install trim around windows another company replaced?
Yes. Jamb extensions, stools, aprons and casing after replacement windows are a regular job for us, whether we put the windows in or not. In a stained-trim house, the new casing is matched to the rest of the room.
How is trim work in Plymouth priced?
Baseboard by the linear foot and casing by the opening, with crown by the foot. Stain-grade matching costs more than paint-grade. Send photos and we reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.
