Interior door installation in Cambridge, MN covers prehung doors with new jambs, slabs fitted to the old frames of older in-town houses, and hollow-core builder doors swapped for solid-core in 1990s-and-newer homes. JMB Builders shims each door at the hinges and strike, sets even margins, cases it and installs your hardware. Priced per door, and several doors in one visit lower the per-door cost. Send photos and we reply within one business day.
- Priced per door, prehung or slab
- Hollow-core to solid-core swaps
- Old doors, jambs and casing hauled away

Doors in Cambridge homes fail in two different ways. In the early-1900s and mid-century houses in town, the doors are usually solid wood, often stained, hung in frames that have shifted as the house settled. They rub, swing open on their own, or the latch no longer reaches the strike. Most of those can be planed and rehung, or fitted with a new slab in the old jamb.
In the 1990s-and-newer houses on the edges of town, builders used hollow-core prehung doors with thin jambs. Twenty-some years later the hinge screws have stripped out of the jamb, the bottoms are chipped from vacuums, and the doors sound hollow. Replacing them with solid-core prehung units, all in one style, is a common whole-house job.
Each door is set plumb, shimmed behind the hinges and the strike, and fastened through the shims so it stays put. Casing matches the rest of the house. Doors arrive primed or prefinished; painting is quoted as its own line, or we leave them primed and you paint.

- Photos of the finished doors in your job folder
- Painting or staining when you want it, quoted as its own line
How it is priced: per door
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- How many doors, since one trip for several costs less per door
- Prehung replacement vs. a new slab fitted to an existing jamb
- Hollow-core, solid-core, panel or interior French door
- Older openings out of square that need the jamb reset or the slab trimmed
- Matching stained casing in an older in-town house
- Reusing hardware vs. new knobs, levers and hinges
Photograph each door closed, the hinge side and the gap at the top, and note the room. Count the doors and say whether you want slabs or full prehung units.
How long it takes
Two to four prehung doors in a day. Slab fits in older frames take longer per door. A whole-house swap in a 1990s two-story usually runs two to three days.
How your project works
- 1
Photos and a count
You send a photo of each door and its frame. We sort out which are slab swaps and which need a full prehung unit, and price them per door.
- 2
Measure and order
Jamb width, height and swing are measured before doors are ordered. Plaster walls in older Cambridge houses are often thicker than drywall, so the jamb has to be sized to the wall.
- 3
Hang and case
Old doors and jambs come out, new units are shimmed and fastened through the shims, casing goes back on, and every latch is checked.
- 4
Walkthrough
We open and close each door with you, adjust anything that rubs, and put photos of the finished doors in your job folder.
Interior Door Installation in Cambridge, MN: questions, answered
Can you hang interior doors I bought from a lumberyard or big-box store?
Yes. We install doors you bought for labor only, as long as the size and handing are right for the opening. Send a photo of the label and of the opening before you buy and we check it. A door with the wrong handing is easier to return than to install.
Should I keep the old wood doors in my older Cambridge home?
If the slab is solid and only the fit is bad, often yes. Planing, rehanging on new hinges or moving the strike can fix a rubbing or unlatched door for less than replacing it. If the doors are cracked or warped but the frame is sound, a new slab fitted to the old jamb keeps the original casing in place.
Is it worth replacing hollow-core doors with solid-core?
In most 1990s-and-newer homes, yes, if the doors are being replaced anyway. Solid-core doors block more sound between bedrooms, close with some weight and stand up better to bumps. They are heavier, so the top hinge gets long screws into the framing behind the jamb.
Slab or prehung: which kind of interior door do I need?
A slab is the door alone, hung in your existing jamb. It makes sense when the frame is square and the casing is worth keeping, which is often true in older homes. A prehung door comes in its own jamb and is the faster, cleaner choice when the old frames are thin or damaged, as in many builder-grade houses.
Can you shorten interior doors after new flooring goes in?
Yes. Thicker flooring or new carpet often leaves doors dragging. We take them off, cut the bottom square against a guide so the edge does not chip, seal the cut edge and rehang them. On hollow-core doors a deep cut can go past the bottom rail, and the rail is glued back in.
How long does a whole-house interior door replacement take?
Two to four prehung doors go in per day. A house with ten to fifteen doors usually takes two to three days once the doors are on site. Older homes with slab fits in out-of-square frames take longer per door, so we plan those as consecutive days on a trip up Highway 65.
