A trim carpenter in Coon Rapids, MN from JMB Builders replaces the clamshell base and narrow casing still in many 1960s–80s ramblers and split-levels, and trims out windows that were swapped over the years so every opening matches again. Coped corners, base scribed to the floor. Base is priced per linear foot and casing per opening. Send photos and we reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.

  • Base per linear foot, casing per opening
  • Clamshell trim out, new profiles in
  • Trim-out of replaced windows
Living room with new windows beside the fireplace under a wood ceiling

The classic Coon Rapids house is a rambler or split-level from the 1960s, 70s or 80s, and a lot of them still have the original trim: narrow clamshell casing and a low clamshell base. It was the cheapest profile of its day, and it makes the rooms look plain next to new flooring and paint.

The windows in these houses have often been replaced more than once, a few at a time, and each round left different trim behind: wood casing on one, a drywall return on the next, and a window from a big-box store with no inside trim at all. Our most common trim job here is pulling all of that together so every window has the same jamb extensions, stool and casing.

Swapping the base and casing at the same time makes the biggest change for the work. We install casing, base and crown, coped and scribed, and haul the old trim away. We also do the same trim work in Blaine and Brooklyn Park.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • A photo of each room and of each window from inside, close enough to see the jamb
  • The profile you want, or a photo of a look you like
  • Paint color, or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself
  • Windows or trim you already bought, with sizes or footage

What JMB supplies

  • Primed MDF or finger-jointed pine casing, base, shoe and crown
  • Removal and haul-away of clamshell trim
  • Jamb extensions, stool and apron so every window matches
  • Coped inside corners and base scribed to the floor
  • Filler and caulk at every joint
  • Painting when you want it, quoted as its own line
  • Photos of the finished rooms in your job folder

How it is priced: per linear foot

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Linear footage of base and the count of window and door openings
  • Windows that need new jamb extensions to reach the wall
  • Mixed window trim to tear out: wood, drywall returns or none
  • Profile size and paint-grade vs. stain-grade
  • Floors that need scribing after new LVP or carpet
  • Painting, quoted as a separate line

Send a photo of every window from inside, one of each room from the doorway, and a close-up of the existing base.

How long it takes

Trimming out a few replaced windows: a day. A rambler's main floor of base and casing: two to three days. A split-level with both levels: three to four days.

Trim Carpenter in Coon Rapids, MN: questions, answered

Can you trim out windows someone else installed in my Coon Rapids house?

Yes. We add jamb extensions where the window sits back from the wall, then stool, apron and casing to match the rest of the house. It works the same whether the windows came from a contractor or a big-box store.

What replaces clamshell trim?

Usually a taller base and a wider casing with a simple profile, in primed MDF or pine. Craftsman-style flat casing and a square base are popular in ramblers. We show you a few profiles and you pick.

Can the windows match if they were replaced at different times?

Yes. Trim is the part that ties them together. We take off whatever is there, whether wood, drywall returns or nothing, and put the same extensions, stool and casing on every window.

Do I need new baseboard after new flooring?

Often. New LVP or carpet can change the floor height and leave gaps under clamshell base. If you are changing the floor, it is a good time to change the base profile too, since it is coming off anyway.

Should the trim on a split-level be the same on both levels?

It looks best that way. Many split-levels were finished in stages, so the lower level often has different trim. We run one profile on both levels so the house reads as one.
