A trim carpenter in Blaine, MN works on three kinds of houses: 1960s–80s ramblers and split-entries with dated clamshell casing, 1990s–2000s homes with thin builder trim, and new builds that came with drywall-return windows and no crown. JMB Builders, licensed and based in Zimmerman, installs baseboard, casing and crown in all three. Baseboard and crown are priced per linear foot, casing per opening. Send photos and we reply within one business day.

  • Base and crown per foot, casing per opening
  • Inside corners coped, outside corners mitered
  • Older, 2000s and brand-new Blaine homes

Blaine has houses from the 1960s to this year, and the trim job changes with the era. In the older ramblers and split-entries it is usually clamshell casing and base, narrow and rounded, that owners want gone. We pull it, patch the drywall line it leaves, and put up a flat or profiled casing and a taller base that suit the house.

In the 1990s and 2000s homes the trim is thin and flat, often finger-jointed pine or MDF nailed up fast. The fix is a taller base with a cap, casing with a back band, and crown on the main floor. On the newest homes it is often the reverse problem: the windows were finished with drywall returns and there is no crown anywhere. We add jamb extensions and a stool where the window needs one, case it, and run crown in the living areas.

The work itself is the same in every era. Inside corners on base are coped so they stay tight through a Minnesota winter, outside corners are mitered and glued, and base is scribed to floors that are not flat. Everything is filled and caulked. We do the same work in Coon Rapids and Spring Lake Park.

  • The profile you like, or a photo of trim you have seen and want

  • Window and door casing, with jamb extensions and stool where drywall returns are replaced
  • Crown in the rooms you choose, coped and fitted to the ceiling line

  • Nail holes filled, joints caulked, ready for paint
  • Photos of the finished rooms in your job folder

How it is priced: per linear foot

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Linear feet of base and crown, and the number of window and door openings
  • Removing clamshell or builder trim vs. trimming bare drywall returns
  • Profile height and whether the base gets a cap or the casing a back band
  • Jamb extensions and stools where windows had drywall returns
  • Floors and ceilings that need heavy scribing
  • Paint-grade vs. stain-grade material

A photo of each room from the doorway, a close-up of the old trim and a window and door count is enough for a firm number.

How long it takes

Base and casing for one room: part of a day. A main floor of base, casing and crown: two to three days. A whole house: about a week, depending on openings.

Situations and options

Older rambler or split-entry

Clamshell casing and base removed and replaced with a flat or profiled casing and a taller base, room by room or the whole house at once.

1990s–2000s builder trim upgrade

Thin base replaced with a taller base and cap, a back band added to the casing, and crown in the kitchen, living and dining areas.

New build with drywall returns

Windows given jamb extensions, a stool and casing, and crown added where the builder left plain corners, so a new Blaine house looks finished.

Trim Carpenter in Blaine, MN: questions, answered

Can you replace the clamshell trim in my Blaine rambler?

Yes, it is one of the most common trim jobs in Blaine's older ramblers and split-entries. We pull the clamshell casing and base, patch the line on the wall, and install a flat or profiled casing and a taller base. Most owners do the whole main floor at once so the rooms match.

My new Blaine house has drywall corners at the windows. Can you add casing?

Yes. We add jamb extensions so the window has a wood jamb to the face of the wall, put in a stool if you want a sill, and case it. The drywall corner bead gets cut back where the jamb goes in. It changes the look of the room more than any other trim job.

How is trim carpentry priced in Blaine?

Baseboard and crown are priced per linear foot, and window and door casing per opening. Removal of old trim, the profile you pick and the number of jamb extensions move the number. There are no prices on this site; send photos and we reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.

Do you install crown molding in Blaine homes?

Yes, usually in the living, dining and kitchen areas. Inside corners are coped, and the crown is fitted to the ceiling line, which is rarely perfectly straight in a newer house either. Caulk at the ceiling covers small gaps, not big ones, so the fitting matters.

Do you also hang interior doors when you redo the trim?

Yes. Doors and casing are often done together, since new casing is the time to swap a hollow-core slab or a whole prehung unit. We hang them, case them and fit the hardware on the same visit.

Does JMB paint the new trim?

Yes, if you want it. Trim goes up primed, filled and caulked, and painting is quoted as a separate line. Or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.
