Custom Built-Ins in Elk River, MN

A built-in should look like it was always part of the house, which in an older Elk River home means matching wood that has darkened for decades.

Custom built-ins in Elk River, MN are built on site by JMB Builders: cabinets and bookshelves on both sides of a fireplace, bookcase walls, window seats and office desks. In older homes near downtown we stain-match the built-in to the original millwork; in newer subdivisions most are paint-grade to match white trim. Plywood boxes are scribed to the walls and tied in with base and crown. Priced per project, quoted from photos.

Built-in work in Elk River follows the town's housing. Older homes near the downtown core often have stained wood trim, and a new bookcase or window seat there has to match it in species, profile and color or it looks added on. We build those in stain-grade plywood with solid face frames, run the base and casing in the room's profile, and test stain on scrap against the old trim.

In the 1990s and 2000s subdivisions, the trim is usually painted or about to be, and built-ins are paint-grade: poplar face frames on plywood or MDF boxes, primed and caulked. The common spots are the walls on either side of a gas fireplace, a home office, and a window seat in a bay or a kid's room.

Every built-in is plywood boxes screwed to the studs and to each other on a level base, with the sides scribed to the wall. Shelves carry a hardwood nosing so they stay straight. Lights and outlets inside are wired by a licensed electrician, planned before the boxes are built.

Custom Built-Ins in Elk River, MN: questions, answered

Can a new built-in match the old stained trim in my Elk River house?

Yes. We build in the same species where we can, often oak, and test stain on scrap against the old trim in the room's light. Old finish has ambered over the years, so the match is usually built up in more than one coat. Staining is quoted as its own line.

How close can built-ins be to a fireplace?

It depends on the fireplace. Gas inserts and wood-burning fireplaces have clearances to combustible material set by the maker and by code. We read the fireplace manual or label and keep the cabinets and mantel outside those limits. Send a photo of the fireplace and its label if you can find it.

Why build on site instead of buying cabinets?

Store cabinets come in fixed widths, so a wall ends up with filler strips and a gap at the ceiling. Built on site, the boxes fill the wall end to end, the sides are scribed to walls that are not straight, and the crown ties into the room's crown. In older homes with uneven walls, the difference shows most.

Do built-ins need a permit in Elk River?

Cabinets and shelves on their own are not usually a permit item. New wiring for lights inside is electrical work, and most cities require an electrical permit for it. If the job opens a wall for a niche or anything structural, we check with the City of Elk River building department first.

How long does a built-in take?

A window seat takes one to two days on site. Cabinets and shelves on both sides of a fireplace take four to six. Stain-grade work and matching an old finish add time. You get the dates before we start.
