Custom Built-Ins in Anoka, MN

You want shelves beside the fireplace or a seat under the front window that look like they came with the house, not like furniture shoved against the wall.

Custom built-ins in Anoka, MN: JMB Builders builds bookcases, cabinets beside a fireplace, window seats and mudroom benches on site, scribed to walls and floors that are rarely straight in the city's older homes. Face frames and trim are sized to the house, stain-grade or painted. Priced per project from photos and wall measurements; we reply within one business day, or come out for a free in-home estimate.

  • Priced per project
  • Scribed to walls and floors on site
  • Stain-grade or paint-grade

A built-in in an early-1900s Anoka house has to look like it was always there. That means face frames as wide as the casing around them, a base that carries the baseboard line across, and wood that takes the same stain as the trim. A white unit pushed against a wall of stained wood reads as furniture.

Those houses push back. Plaster bows, floors slope toward the middle of the house, and corners are seldom square. We build the boxes a little narrow, set them level on a plinth, and scribe the face frame and end panels to the wall so the gap disappears instead of getting a bead of caulk.

In the postwar and 1970s–80s homes the asks change: an entertainment wall in a finished basement, lockers by the garage door, a desk in a spare bedroom. Same build, flatter walls, usually paint-grade. We build the same pieces in Ramsey and Andover.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • A straight-on photo of the wall with a tape across it, and the ceiling height
  • What it has to hold: books, a TV and gear, coats and boots
  • Stain-grade or paint-grade, and the color
  • Hardware, lights or a TV you have picked out; we install them, with any wiring done by a licensed electrician

What JMB supplies

  • A drawing to your wall with bay widths and shelf spacing
  • Plywood boxes set level on a plinth and screwed to the framing
  • Face frames and trim sized to the room's casing and base
  • End panels and frames scribed to plaster or drywall that is not flat
  • Doors on concealed hinges and adjustable shelves with a hardwood nosing
  • Staining or painting when you want it, quoted as its own line
  • Photos of the finished built-in in your job folder

How it is priced: per project

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Width, height and number of bays
  • Open shelves vs. doors and drawers
  • Stain-grade hardwood to blend with original trim vs. paint-grade poplar and MDF
  • How far the walls and floor are out, and how much scribing that takes
  • Working around a fireplace, window or radiator
  • Lights or outlets in the unit, wired by a licensed electrician

A straight-on photo with a tape across the wall, the ceiling height, and paint or stain is enough to sketch it.

How long it takes

A window seat or mudroom bench: two to three days. Bookcases on both sides of a fireplace: about a week, a little longer for stain-grade.

Situations and options

Bookcases beside a fireplace

A matched pair of shelf units, often with doored cabinets below and the mantel height carried across. Built to the same face-frame width as the room's casing.

Window seat under a front window

A bench box with a lid or drawers, set between two shelf units or wall to wall. The seat height and depth are laid out with you before it is built.

Basement entertainment wall

Cabinets and shelves around the TV in a finished lower level, set on a plinth off the concrete with openings for cords and ventilation.

Mudroom bench and lockers

Cubbies, hooks and a bench by the back or garage door, in paint-grade wood with a hardwood seat that stands up to boots.

Custom Built-Ins in Anoka, MN: questions, answered

Can a built-in match the stained trim in my older Anoka home?

We build stain-grade units in a species close to the existing trim and stain a sample for you to approve first. Face frames and base are sized to the casing and baseboard in the room. Old wood has aged, so the goal is a close blend, and we show you the sample before the build.

How do you build a built-in when the walls and floor are not level?

The boxes are set level on a plinth and shimmed, not built to follow the floor. Then the end panels and face frames are scribed to the wall and the base is scribed to the floor. That keeps doors and shelves straight while the edges meet the room tight.

Can you build a window seat with storage?

Yes. A window seat can have a lift-up lid, drawers, or doors on the front. We lay out the seat height and depth with you and keep any heat register in the wall clear or ducted through the toe kick.

What is different about built-ins in a finished basement?

The base sits on a plinth so plywood is not on bare concrete, and the back is kept off a foundation wall that can be cool and damp. We leave access to any cleanouts, shutoffs or ducts behind it.

Can you put lights in a built-in bookcase?

Yes. We plan the wire path and leave the cavities open so the wiring can be run by a licensed electrician before the panels close up. Puck lights, strip lights in the face frame, or a light over the top all work.

Do you build built-ins in Ramsey and Andover?

Yes. JMB Builders is based in Zimmerman and builds bookcases, window seats and mudroom units in Anoka, Ramsey, Andover, Champlin and across the north metro.
