Brooklyn Park houses have walls that waste space: a blank side of a rambler living room, a two-story entry with nowhere for boots.

Custom built-ins in Brooklyn Park, MN are plywood cabinets and shelves built on site to fit one wall: a bookcase wall in a rambler living room, a bench and hooks at a two-story's garage entry, a media wall in a basement. JMB Builders builds them in paint-grade poplar and MDF or stain-grade plywood, priced per project and quoted from your photos.
- Priced per project
- Built on site, scribed to your walls
- Paint-grade or stain-grade

Brooklyn Park has two kinds of houses for most built-in work. In the south end it is 1960s and 70s ramblers: one level, a modest living room, small bedroom closets and a basement that often got finished later. In the north half it is 80s and 90s two-stories with a garage entry, a family room and a bonus space over the garage. The built-in that makes sense is different in each one, and that is where we start.
In a rambler the wall worth building on is usually the long living room wall or the basement wall the TV faces. A row of bookcases with base cabinets, or a media wall with a chase for the cables, gives the room storage the original closets never had. In a two-story the first ask is the garage entry: a bench, a row of hooks, cubbies above and a shoe shelf below, so the coats stop landing on the kitchen chairs.
Everything is built from plywood boxes screwed to the studs, tied together with a face frame and finished with base and crown that match the room. Built-ins on their own are carpentry; if a design adds lights or an outlet, the wiring is done by a licensed electrician and we check with the City of Brooklyn Park building department on any permit the job needs. We have had install work in Brooklyn Park this year, and Maple Grove and Champlin are on the same trips.

What you supply
- Photos of the wall straight on, with the width, the ceiling height and where outlets, vents and windows sit
- What it holds: books, a TV and its gear, coats and boots, toys
- Paint-grade or stain-grade, and open shelves or doors at the bottom
- Knobs and pulls, if you want to pick them; we install them
- Painting is quoted as a separate line, or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself
What JMB supplies
- A sketch to your wall with bay widths, heights and shelf spacing before we build
- Plywood cabinet boxes fastened to the studs and scribed to the walls and floor
- Poplar face frames for paint, or hardwood face frames for stain
- Shelves with a hardwood front edge so a loaded shelf stays straight
- Doors on concealed hinges, and drawers where the design calls for them
- Base and crown run into the built-in so it matches the room
- Cutouts for outlets and vents, and wire chases planned for your electrician
- Painting or staining when you want it, quoted as its own line
- Photos of the finished built-in in your job folder
How it is priced: per project
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Wall width and ceiling height, which set the number of bays
- Open shelves vs. base cabinets with doors or drawers
- Paint-grade poplar and MDF vs. stain-grade plywood
- A basement wall with a low ceiling, soffit or beam to build around
- A window, vent or outlet in the middle of the wall
- Lights or outlets in the built-in, with the wiring by a licensed electrician
One straight-on photo with a tape measure across the wall, the ceiling height and a note on paint or stain lets us sketch it.
How long it takes
An entry bench with hooks and cubbies: two to three days. A living room or basement wall of cabinets and shelves: about a week on site. Painting after, as its own step.

Situations and options
Rambler living room bookcases
Base cabinets with doors along the long wall and open shelves above to the ceiling, finished with crown. Gives a one-level house the storage its closets lack.
Two-story garage entry drop zone
A bench with a lift-up or open shoe shelf, a hook rail at coat height and cubbies above. Built to the entry wall so it does not block the door swing.
Basement media wall
Cabinets for the gear, a TV panel with plywood backing and a cable chase, shelves on both sides. Built around the soffits and beams these basements usually have.
Bedroom closet or desk nook
Shelves, rods and drawers built into a small rambler bedroom closet, or a desk with shelves above in the bonus room of a two-story.
Custom Built-Ins in Brooklyn Park, MN: questions, answered
How much do custom built-ins cost in Brooklyn Park?
We price built-ins per project, not per hour. The number comes from the wall width, the ceiling height, how many cabinets with doors there are, and paint-grade or stain-grade material. There are no prices on this site; send a photo of the wall with a measurement and we reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.
What built-in works best in a 1960s rambler?
Usually a row of base cabinets with shelves above on the longest living room wall, or a media wall in the basement. Ramblers from that era have small closets, so a built-in with doors at the bottom does a lot of the storage work. We sketch it to the wall so it fits the window and outlet positions you already have.
Can you build a mudroom bench in a two-story garage entry?
Yes. Most 80s and 90s two-stories have a short wall between the garage door and the kitchen, and a bench with hooks and cubbies fits there. We keep the depth shallow enough that the doors still swing, and the bench seat can lift up for storage. Send a photo of the entry from the garage door looking in.
Do built-ins need a permit in Brooklyn Park?
A built-in that is only cabinets and shelves is carpentry. If the design adds new outlets or lights, a licensed electrician does that wiring, and wiring work usually needs its own permit. We check with the City of Brooklyn Park building department for each job and pull what it needs.
Can a built-in go around a basement soffit or beam?
Yes, and in Brooklyn Park basements it usually has to. We scribe the top of the cabinets to the soffit or step the crown around it, so the built-in looks like it was planned with the room. Tell us the ceiling height at the lowest point when you send photos.
Do you work in Maple Grove and Champlin too?
Yes. Brooklyn Park, Maple Grove, Champlin and Coon Rapids are on the same routes for us out of Zimmerman. The built-ins are built the same way in each town: plywood boxes, face frames and trim that match the room.
