Closet shelving is the last trim item in a spec home and the first one a buyer opens a door on. It is also the item trim crews like least, because it is a lot of closets, a lot of measuring, and none of it shows from the hallway. We run it as its own package for builders: the plan says which closets get wire, which get wood, which get double-hang, and we do the whole house in one visit after paint.
Wire shelving goes in with the clips and brackets the system calls for, into studs where the layout allows and into the right anchors where it does not, with the rod support spaced so a full closet of winter coats does not bow the shelf. Wood shelf and rod goes in as a painted cleat on three walls, a shelf scribed to the drywall, and a rod in a bracket every few feet. Both are on the rate sheet, and most builders spec wire in the bedrooms and wood in the master and the pantry.
The package includes the closets the plan forgets: the linen closet with its stack of shelves, the pantry with adjustable or fixed shelving, the laundry shelf over the machines, the coat closet by the front door, and the utility closet shelf. We photograph every closet when it is done so the super and the buyer's walkthrough have the same picture.

Wire or wood closet shelving for a spec home?
Wire is the base spec on most production homes: cheaper, fast to install and it does not need paint. Wood shelf and rod reads as an upgrade the buyer sees, and most builders put it in the master closet and the pantry with wire everywhere else. Both are on the same rate sheet, and the mix is set on the closet schedule per plan.
How do you keep wire closet shelving from pulling out of the wall?
Brackets and rod supports go into studs where the layout allows, and the wall clips go in the anchors the system calls for where the layout misses the framing. A rod support every few feet keeps a full rod of coats from bowing the shelf. We pull hard on every rod before we leave, because a shelf that comes down at the walkthrough is a callback that costs more than the shelf.
When in the build does closet shelving go in?
After paint and before the walkthrough. Shelving before paint means the painter works around it and the cleats get painted onto the wall; shelving after paint goes on a finished wall and the anchors are hidden behind the shelf. Most builders schedule us the week before the buyer's walkthrough, with flooring done so the closets are clean.
Is the pantry and linen closet shelving included in the package?
Yes. The package covers every closet on the plan: bedroom closets, coat closet, linen closet with its shelf stack, pantry with fixed or adjustable shelves, the laundry shelf, and the utility closet shelf. Those are the ones a trim crew skips and the super finds on walkthrough day. They are line items on the per-house price so nothing is left for later.
Can you do the closet shelving on a house another trim crew finished?
