On a sided house the trim is where the water gets in or does not. The window and door casings, the drip caps over them, the corner boards and the frieze under the soffit all have to be flashed to the housewrap and lapped so the siding sheds onto them, not behind them. A siding crew that is paid by the square runs the siding well and treats the trim as what slows them down. We do the trim as its own trade so both scopes get done by people who are good at them.
The way it usually runs: your crew wraps the house and sets the windows, or the builder's window crew does. We come in and do all the trim on the house, casings with a drip cap at every head, corner boards, frieze and band boards, garage door trim and any mounting blocks, taped to the wrap and ready for the siding to die into. Your crew follows with the siding, and the J-channel or the lap meets a trim board that is already flashed. On some jobs we trim behind the siding instead, when the siding is up and the trim was skipped or done wrong.
Material is the siding company's call. LP SmartSide trim in the widths on the spec, cellular PVC where the spec or the exposure calls for it, aluminum-wrapped where the house is getting coil. We supply it or bill through yours. Every opening gets a photo before the siding covers the flashing, which is the photo that settles the argument when a window leaks two years later.

- Trim widths and any built-up head casing or sill nose detail on the spec
- Trim ahead of the siding on a bare wrapped wall vs. behind the siding on a house already sided
- Two-story and gable work that takes staging
- Houses per month from the same siding company, which sets the standing rate
Send the elevations or a window count and the trim spec. That is enough for a per-opening rate with the linear trim priced by the foot, and it holds on the next house with the same spec.
How long it takes
Trim on a typical single-family house ahead of the siding: two to three days for the crew. Behind existing siding, about the same plus the time to cut the siding back at each opening.

Situations and options
Trim ahead of your siding crew
The house is wrapped and the windows are set. We trim every opening, run the corners and frieze, and leave the wall ready for your crew to side up to. The cleanest sequence for flashing.
Trim behind the siding
The siding is up and the openings were left in J-channel or bare. We cut the siding back, add PVC or LP trim with a drip cap, and reseal so the trim laps the siding correctly. Common on a house another crew walked away from.
Windows, doors and trim in one crew
We set the windows and doors on the wrapped house and trim them in the same visit, so the flashing sequence is one crew's responsibility from the nail fin to the drip cap.
Corners, frieze and band only
Your crew does the window trim as part of the siding but wants the corner boards, frieze and band boards run first. We do the linear trim by the foot and leave the openings to you.

How do you price exterior trim per opening?
Each window and door opening has a rate based on the trim spec: material, widths, whether there is a built-up head or a sill nose, and whether we are trimming a bare wrapped wall or cutting back existing siding. Corner boards, frieze and band boards are priced by the linear foot on the same sheet. Send the elevations and the spec and the rate for the house comes back within a business day; it holds for the next house on the same spec.
Should exterior trim go on before or after the siding?
Before, on most siding types. The casings and corner boards are flashed to the housewrap with tape and a drip cap at the head, and the siding is then cut to meet them, so any water on the siding sheds onto the trim and out. Trim added after the siding has to be cut in and relies on sealant at the joint. We do both, but ahead of the siding is the sequence we recommend to every siding company we work with.
Do you install LP SmartSide trim?
Yes, it is the most common trim spec on Twin Cities siding jobs, and we install it to the manufacturer's instructions: cut ends primed, the gap left at the joints for expansion, the right fasteners at the right spacing, a drip cap at every head, and sealant where the spec calls for it. We do PVC trim the same way with its own fastening and joint rules, and aluminum-wrapped trim where the house is getting coil.
Can you set the windows and doors too, not just the trim?
Yes. Installing windows and doors as a sub is most of what we do for window companies, and on a siding job it means one crew is responsible for the flashing from the nail fin through the drip cap. We set the units in the wrapped opening to the manufacturer's instructions, tape them, trim them, and photograph each one before the siding goes on.
How do you invoice a siding company?
One invoice per house, per opening with the linear trim as line items, with the address and your job number on it, sent when the photos are in the folder. Paid by check or direct deposit. If you run several houses a month we can batch them on one invoice per month, whichever your office prefers.
