Apartment Window Color Choices — Changing a Building's Exterior Look

The building is getting new windows and the owner wants it to stop looking dated, maybe black or bronze frames, without a color that limits the line or the budget.

Apartment window color choices depend on the line: some offer only white and almond, others Dark Bronze, Black or gray exteriors with a white interior. JMB Builders brings samples from the lines we are pricing, matches exterior capping and doors to the frame color, and installs the building unit by unit across the Twin Cities metro to St. Cloud. Priced per opening. Photo reply within one business day, or a free walkthrough.

  • Priced per opening, color on every line
  • Samples from each line we price
  • Capping and doors matched to the frame

On a renovation, window color changes the building more than any other single choice. Color is also tied to the line. The Andersen 100 Series offers White, Sandtone, Terratone, Dark Bronze and Black outside. The Pella 250 Series is White, Almond or Fossil, or a White interior with a Brown or Black exterior. Pella Impervia comes in White, Tan, Brown, Morning Sky Gray and Black. ProVia Endure is White, Beige or Sandstone, plus painted exterior colors. ProVia ecoLite is white only.

Most rental buildings keep the interior white, so tenants and turnover painters work around one color, and put the color on the exterior with a dual-color frame. The exterior capping coil around each window, the entry and patio doors, and the door hardware are picked with the frame so the building reads as one, and every choice is written on the bid.

Some buildings need approval before the exterior changes: a condo board, an association's design rules, a historic district or a city design review. We ask the city about exterior review when we check its contractor licensing and permit rules, before we bid. A sample or mock-up unit helps a board decide.

How it is priced: per opening

  • The line chosen and the colors it offers
  • New exterior capping in a matching color

  • Dark interior versus white interior
  • Painting trim or doors, quoted as its own line

Send elevation photos of the building and any design guidelines from the board, association or city. We bring samples to the walkthrough.

How long it takes

Lead time depends on the brand and color and is written on the quote. Dark colors can take longer on some lines. Once windows arrive, a unit typically takes one to two working days.

Situations and options

White or almond

The widest choice of lines and styles, and the lowest cost per opening. Blends with most older brick and siding.

Dark exterior, white interior

Black, Dark Bronze or Brown outside on dual-color frames from lines like the Pella 250 or the Andersen 100 Series. Tenants see a white window inside.

Gray or tan for a softer change

Pella Impervia's Morning Sky Gray or Tan, or Andersen's Terratone. A change from white that is less stark than black on a large facade.

Painted exterior on vinyl

ProVia Endure offers painted exterior colors such as Classic Bronze. Confirm the current palette and the paint warranty at the walkthrough.

Apartment Window Color Choices — Changing a Building's Exterior Look: questions, answered

Can apartment windows be black on the outside and white inside?

Yes, on lines that offer dual-color frames. The Pella 250 Series offers a White interior with a Black or Brown exterior, and Pella Impervia offers a White interior with a Black, Brown, Tan or Morning Sky Gray exterior. The Andersen 100 Series offers Black and Dark Bronze outside with a White interior.

Does the city need to approve a window color change on an apartment building?

Sometimes. Historic districts, planned developments and some city design reviews cover exterior changes on multifamily buildings, and condo associations often have their own rules. We ask the city when we check its contractor licensing and permit rules before the bid.

Should the window capping match the window color?

Usually. The aluminum capping coil around each window is bent from stock in many colors, and matching it to the frame makes the window look larger and cleaner. A contrasting capping color is a design choice, and it is written on the bid either way.

Do dark window frames fade on a south wall?

It depends on the line and its finish. Andersen warrants its 100 Series dark exterior colors against fading, flaking and peeling, and Pella describes Impervia's powder coat as built to last. Read each manufacturer's warranty for the color you pick.

Should the entry doors match the new window color?

Most owners match the frame color or pick one accent color for all entry doors. We price the doors in the matching finish on the same bid so the order and the look come together.

Can we see a window color on the building before ordering?

Yes. We bring samples, and for a board decision a mock-up unit, one window installed in the chosen color, shows it on the actual wall. The mock-up is priced on its own line.
