Replace Windows Without Removing Siding — Vinyl and Steel Siding
The windows are shot but the siding is fine, and someone told you new windows mean new siding.

You can replace windows without removing siding. An insert window goes in the old frame and the siding is not touched. A full frame window means unlocking the vinyl or steel siding around that opening, setting the new window and flashing it to the house wrap, then new J-channel and the same siding locked back. JMB Builders does it across the Twin Cities metro. Priced per window.
- Siding stays on the house
- Insert or full frame, chosen per window
- Flashing taped to the house wrap

Most sided houses can get new windows and keep their siding. An insert window fits inside the old frame; the old wood trim is wrapped in aluminum capping and the siding and J-channel stay exactly where they are. That works when the frames are sound.
When a window needs full frame, the old window has to come out to the rough opening. On vinyl, the courses around the window are unlocked with a zip tool and lifted back, the old J-channel comes off, and the house wrap above the opening is cut so the new nail fin slips under it. The window is set, flashing tape is lapped shingle style, new J-channel goes on, and the same siding pieces are locked back down.
Steel siding is less forgiving because it creases when it is bent back, so pieces near the window sometimes have to be replaced. We check for spare pieces in the garage before the job, and tell you at the measure if a color match will be hard.

What you supply
- Your choice of window brand, color, glass and grilles
- Any spare siding pieces left from when the house was sided
- Clear access to each window inside and along the outside wall
What JMB supplies
- In-home measure and an insert or full frame call for each window
- Insert windows with aluminum capping over the old frame, siding untouched
- Full frame windows with siding unlocked, lifted and reset
- House wrap cut and lapped, flashing tape, sill pan where needed
- New J-channel around each full frame window
- Interior stops or casing; painting quoted as a separate line, or paint it yourself
- Photos of the finished windows in your job folder
How it is priced: per window
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Insert vs. full frame for each opening
- Vinyl siding vs. steel siding around full frame windows
- Siding pieces that crack or crease and need replacing
- Rot in the sill or rough opening once the old window is out
- New J-channel color and exterior capping
- Window count, size and second-story access
Send a photo of each window from outside showing the siding and trim around it, and one from inside. Say whether the siding is vinyl or steel.
How long it takes
Three to five inserts a day. Full frame windows in a sided wall take longer per opening because the siding comes off and goes back on.

Situations and options
Insert with capping
The new window sits in the old frame and the frame is wrapped in coil. The siding and J-channel are not disturbed. The usual call when the old frames are solid.
Full frame, vinyl siding reset
Vinyl courses around the window are unlocked and lifted, the window is flashed to the wrap, new J-channel goes on and the same pieces lock back. A cracked piece is replaced from spares or a close match.
Full frame, steel siding
Steel creases when bent back, so pieces next to the window are often replaced rather than reused. Matching faded steel is the hard part, and we tell you at the measure.
Replace Windows Without Removing Siding — Vinyl and Steel Siding: questions, answered
Do I need new siding to get new windows?
No. On most vinyl and steel sided houses the windows are replaced and the siding stays. Insert windows do not touch the siding at all. Full frame windows mean lifting the siding around each opening and putting the same pieces back.
Can you replace windows without damaging vinyl siding?
Yes, most of the time. Vinyl unlocks course by course with a zip tool and goes back the same way. Old vinyl that has gone brittle can crack, especially in cold weather, so we look for spare pieces before the job and replace any that break.
What is J-channel and does it get replaced with new windows?
J-channel is the trim piece around a window that holds the cut ends of vinyl siding. On an insert job it stays. On a full frame job it comes off with the old window and new J-channel is installed around the new one, lapped so water runs out over the siding.
Can full frame windows go into a vinyl sided house?
Yes. The siding around the window is lifted, the house wrap above is cut so the new nail fin tucks under it, flashing tape is lapped shingle style and the siding goes back down. It is more work per window than an insert, and it fixes rot and leaks that an insert cannot.
What if a piece of siding breaks during window replacement?
It gets replaced. Spare pieces from the original siding job are the best match. If there are none, a piece can be taken from a hidden spot like behind a deck, or a close current color is used. Faded siding never matches new perfectly, and we tell you that before work starts.
Should I replace windows before or after new siding?
If new siding is coming within a few years, doing both together lets the windows be flashed into new wrap with no siding to lift. If the siding is sound and has years left, replace the windows now and keep it.
