Siding and Windows at the Same Time — One Crew, One Job
If the siding is coming off anyway, it is the cheapest the windows will ever be to replace — and the only time the window flashing and the wall flashing can be done as one piece.

Windows and siding are the same wall. Every window is a hole in the siding that has to be flashed to the house wrap so water running down the wall goes around the window, not behind it. When a siding crew works around old windows, they flash to whatever is there. When a window crew replaces windows in an existing wall, they cut the siding back and flash to that. Neither gets to do it the way it is drawn in the manual: window flange over the sill pan, side flashing over the flange, wrap over the head flashing, siding over all of it. That happens when one crew does both, in that order, on the same day.
It is also the cheaper way. Full-frame window replacement, where the whole old unit and frame come out and the new window is set in the rough opening, is the better window job but it normally means cutting and patching the siding and trim at every opening. With the siding already off, that cost disappears, and you get full-frame windows for close to the cost of insert windows. The exterior trim around the new windows is then part of the siding job, not a patch.

Send yard photos of each side plus one interior window photo. At the site visit we measure every opening and every wall; window sizes are locked there, so the photo quote carries an allowance until then.
How long it takes
Windows go in as each wall is opened, so the job runs about as long as the siding alone: one to two weeks for most houses, two to three for a large two-story.

Every window opening measured for the order, every wall measured for siding, samples for both. The quote becomes firm and the windows are ordered; siding is scheduled for when they arrive.

Strip, windows, wrap
Siding comes off one wall at a time. Old windows out, sheathing repaired, wrap on, sill pans in, new windows set and flashed. No wall is left open overnight.

Siding and trim
New siding and exterior trim over the flashed windows, with drip caps and kick-outs. Inside, the jambs get foamed and the interior trim is reset or replaced.

Every window checked for operation and lock, every exterior joint checked, yard cleaned. Finished photos go in your job folder.

Should I replace windows before or after siding?
Neither; do them together. Windows first means the siding crew has to work around flashing they did not do. Siding first means the window crew cuts your new siding back at every opening. One crew doing both, in the right order, gets the flashing done as one system and saves the cost of patching siding at each window.
Is it cheaper to do siding and windows at the same time?
Yes, compared with doing them in two jobs. The siding tear-off and the window tear-out overlap, the trim around each window is part of the siding job instead of a patch, and full-frame windows cost little more than inserts once the siding is off. The total is still a big number because it is two big jobs, but it is less than the two jobs done a few years apart.
Can I buy my own windows and have you install them with the siding?
Yes. Send us the order details before you buy and we will check the sizes against the openings at the site visit. You supply the windows, we do the tear-out, sill pans, flashing, install, siding and trim. If you would rather we supply them, we do that too.
Full-frame or insert windows when the siding is coming off?
Full-frame. An insert window sits inside the old frame and keeps whatever rot and air leaks the old frame has. With the siding off, the old frame comes out easily and the new window is flashed directly to the wrap. It is the better window and, with the siding already off, it is about the same cost as an insert.
What happens to the interior trim around the windows?
It depends on the window depth. Often the existing casing comes off carefully and goes back on with new jamb extensions. If the casing is damaged or you want a new look, new casing or drywall returns are quoted as their own line. Painting the new trim is quoted separately as well.
Can the patio door and entry door be replaced in the same job?
Yes, and they should be. A patio door is flashed exactly like a large window and it is the opening most likely to have rot at the sill. With the siding off, the door comes out, the sill gets a pan, and the new door is flashed to the wrap before the siding goes back. Entry doors get the same treatment.
