Vinyl siding is made to come apart one panel at a time. Every course locks into the one below it and is nailed loose through a slot at the top, and the course above hides the nails. A zip tool, a flat hook that slides under the bottom lock of the panel above, unlocks it so the damaged panel can be unnailed and pulled out, and the new one goes in the same way. Nobody should be prying vinyl with a flat bar; that is how one cracked panel becomes three.
The hard part is the match. Vinyl profiles get discontinued, manufacturers change names, and the color on the wall has faded from whatever the sample card says. We read the profile from the back of the loose panel or a spare from the garage, order the closest current match, and when the difference would show on the front of the house we take original panels from a hidden wall behind the garage or under the deck and put the new ones there instead.
What is behind the crack matters. A hail hit or a rock that went through the panel usually did not hurt the house wrap, but a wind-torn panel that flapped for a season can take the wrap and the foam board with it. We check before the new panel goes in and tape or replace what is damaged, so the repair is a repair and not a cover.

Situations and options
One or two cracked panels
A rock from the mower or a ladder foot cracked a panel. We unlock the course above, swap the panel, relock it. The quickest siding repair there is, as long as the match is in stock.
Hail-cracked panels on one wall
Hail cracks show as half-moons on the storm side. We photograph each one for your claim, replace the cracked panels, and move originals from a hidden wall to the front when the new color would stand out.
Wind-torn panels and loose courses
A panel that tore off in the wind usually left the course above unlocked and the wrap torn. We repair the wrap, replace the panel, and re-nail the loose courses in the center of the slot so the next gust does not take them.
Discontinued profile
The profile is out of production and nothing current locks into it. We take original panels from behind the garage, under the deck or a back wall and put the closest current match there, so the front of the house stays original.

Can you replace just one piece of vinyl siding?
Yes. Vinyl locks course by course and is nailed through slots hidden by the course above, so one panel can come out and go back without touching the rest of the wall. A zip tool unlocks the panel above, the nails come out, the damaged panel slides out, and the new one goes in and relocks. It is a small job and we still check the wrap behind it.
How do you find a match for discontinued vinyl siding?
The manufacturer and profile name are usually stamped on the back of the panel, so a loose piece or a spare from the garage tells us what it is. If the profile is still made we order it in the closest current color. If it is discontinued, we take original panels from a wall nobody sees and put the closest current match there, so the visible repair is original siding.
Will a new vinyl siding panel match the faded color?
Not perfectly. Vinyl fades in the sun, so a new panel in the same color reads a shade darker on a wall that has been up for years. On a back wall nobody notices. On the front we move original panels from a hidden wall into the repair and put the new panels out back, which is more work but disappears. We will tell you which way makes sense from your photos.
What is a zip tool for vinyl siding?
A zip tool, or siding removal tool, is a flat steel hook that slides under the bottom edge of a vinyl panel and catches the lock of the panel below. Pulled along the panel it unlocks the two courses so the lower one can be unnailed and removed. It is the only right way to take a vinyl panel out; a flat bar or a putty knife cracks the lock and the panel above ends up needing replacement too.
Why did my vinyl siding crack?
Vinyl gets brittle in the cold and cracks from impact: hail, a rock thrown by a mower, a ladder set against it, a ball. It also cracks around a nail that was driven tight instead of loose, because the panel could not move with the temperature and split at the nail. We replace the cracked panel and, if the nails are the cause, re-nail the courses around it loose in the slot.
Does insurance pay to replace hail cracked vinyl siding panels?
Wind and hail damage to siding is covered by most homeowner policies, subject to your deductible. We photograph each cracked panel for the claim, do the repair to the approved scope, and write a supplement if the scope missed the matching problem or the wrap behind the panels. We do not waive deductibles.
