Entry door replacement in St. Michael, MN, on the split-levels and two-stories built here from the mid-1990s to 2010: the old prehung unit removed, rotted sill and jamb feet repaired, a new steel or fiberglass door set in a sill pan with flashing, hardware fitted and trim finished inside and out. JMB Builders supplies the door. Priced per door; send photos or book a free in-home estimate.
- Priced per door, door supplied
- Split-entry and two-story front doors
- Rot repaired, sill pan on every door

Front doors on St. Michael houses from the late 1990s and 2000s were usually builder steel or fiberglass, often with one sidelite. After many winters the common problems are the same from house to house: the bottom of the jamb has gone soft, the threshold no longer seals, the door rubs at the top corner, and steel skins have rusted along the bottom.
Split-levels add a wrinkle. The door opens onto a small landing with stairs going up and down, so there is little room to swing a wider door or add a storm door that opens out without hitting the steps. We measure the landing as well as the opening. On two-stories the foyer gives more room, and owners there more often ask about sidelites or a transom for light.
The fix is the same whichever house you have: pull the old unit, cut out soft wood at the sill and jamb feet, set the new prehung door in a sill pan, flash it into the wall, and adjust it until it latches and seals with light pressure.

- Swing or size changes that affect the landing or framing
- Hardware choice, from a basic lockset to a handle set or smart lock
- Painting door and trim as a separate line
A photo of the door from outside, one from inside, and one of the sill and step is enough to start.

Entry Door Replacement in St. Michael, MN: Splits and Two-Stories: questions, answered
Can I get a wider front door on my St. Michael split-level?
Sometimes, but the landing usually limits it. A wider door swings farther into a small landing and can hit the stairs. We measure the landing and the opening, and if a wider door works, the framing change is quoted; if it does not, a same-size door with glass or a sidelite often gives the look owners want.
Why is the bottom of my front door frame rotting?
Water runs down the door and sits at the bottom of the jamb and the threshold. Years of that, with worn caulk or no sill pan underneath, rot the jamb feet and sometimes the subfloor. Patching the jamb buys time. A new door set in a sill pan, with the soft wood replaced, stops it.
Can a storm door go on a split-level front door?
Usually, yes. The storm door swings out, so the step or stoop outside has to leave room for it to open. We check that when we measure, and we can install the storm door with the new entry door.
Steel or fiberglass for a front door in St. Michael?
Both hold up in Minnesota weather. Fiberglass does not rust or dent and can take a wood-look stain; steel is solid and costs less but can rust if the paint is chipped at the bottom. We quote both on your opening if you want to compare.
Do you check the permit rules for a door replacement in St. Michael?
Yes. A straight swap often does not need a permit, but rules vary by city and by job, and resizing an opening is more likely to need one. We check with the City of St. Michael building department and pull a permit when it applies.
Will the new door match my garage service door?
It can. Many owners replace the front door and the garage service door together so the color and style match. Tell us when you send photos and we will quote both.
