Entry door replacement in St. Paul, MN: JMB Builders measures the opening, orders a prehung door to fit it, including tall and non-stock sizes on older homes, removes the old door and frame, rebuilds the sill, sets the new unit on a pan with flashing, and matches the back-band casing inside. Priced per door. Send photos and we reply within one business day.
- Priced per door, the door included
- Tall and non-stock openings
- Back-band casing matched

St. Paul front doors run from Victorian-era doors near the river bluffs, often taller than today's stock heights and sometimes under a transom, to 1920s bungalow doors with a small glass lite, to plain postwar doors in standard sizes. The older the house, the less likely a door off the shelf fits, and the more the trim around it matters.
We measure the rough opening and order the door to it, or adjust the framing when a standard size makes more sense. Inside, St. Paul casing often has a back band, a second molding around the outside edge. We take it off in pieces to reuse, or build new casing the same way so it matches the rest of the house. A transom above the door can stay where it is while the door below is replaced.
Doors from an enclosed front porch into the house, and back doors into the kitchen, are part of the same work. Our job log has five window and door installs in St. Paul from April through July 2026, all through dealers and builders, and we also replace doors in White Bear Lake and Shoreview. Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

- Measurement of the rough opening and the order for a prehung door to fit, tall sizes included

- Removal and haul-away of the old door and frame
- Rebuilt sill framing and subfloor where they are soft
- Sill pan, flashing, foam and sealant; brickmould outside
- Transom left in place and the trim around it reset
- Lockset, deadbolt and weatherstrip adjusted so it latches and seals
- A check with the City of St. Paul building department and the permit when one is needed
How it is priced: per door
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- The door: steel, fiberglass or wood, solid or with glass
- A tall or non-stock size vs. a standard prehung unit
- Reusing back-band casing vs. building new to match
- A transom or sidelites around the door
- Rot in the sill, threshold framing or subfloor
- Brick, stucco or siding around the outside
- Staining or painting, quoted as a separate line
Send the whole door from both sides with any transom in the shot, the sill up close, and a corner of the casing.
How long it takes
One entry door: about a day on site in a sound opening. A tall custom door takes longer to arrive, and sill or trim work adds time on site. The door is ordered after you approve the quote.

Front Entry Door Replacement in St. Paul, MN: questions, answered
Can you replace a tall front door on an older St. Paul home?
Yes. Many Victorian-era and early-1900s doors are taller than today's stock sizes. We measure the rough opening and order a prehung door to that height, or reframe the opening if you want a standard size. The door is ordered after we measure, never guessed from the old slab.
Can the transom window above my front door stay?
Usually, yes. The door below is replaced and the transom stays in its frame, with the trim around both reset. If the transom glass is cracked or the frame is rotted, we list that as its own line.
Does St. Paul require a permit for an entry door replacement?
A same-size swap is often treated differently from widening the opening or replacing a header. We check with the City of St. Paul building department for your door and pull the permit when one is needed. Any fee is on the quote.
Will the casing around my new St. Paul door match the old trim?
Yes. Older St. Paul trim often has a back band around the casing, and we take it off in pieces to reuse or build new casing the same way. Painting or staining is quoted as its own line, or leave it ready for you.
Do you replace the door between an enclosed porch and the house?
Yes. It is often an original exterior door that became an interior one when the porch was closed in, and it may still need to seal against a cold porch. We replace it as a prehung unit and trim both sides.
How is entry door replacement priced in St. Paul?
Per door, with the door, the install and any repair as separate lines. Size, material, glass, a transom or sidelites, sill rot and trim matching are what move the number. Send photos and we reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.
