Entry door replacement in Cambridge, MN, means a new prehung door, not just a slab: JMB Builders measures the opening, orders a steel or fiberglass unit in the swing and style you pick, pulls the old door and frame, replaces rot at the sill and jamb, sets the new unit in a sill pan with flashing, and trims inside and out. Priced per door; quoted from your photos or at a free in-home estimate.

  • Priced per door, prehung unit included
  • Rotted sill, jamb feet and subfloor fixed
  • Photos answered within one business day
Brick home front with a new arched grid picture window, flanking windows and the front entry door

Cambridge front doors come in two kinds. The early-1900s and mid-century homes in town often still have a wood door in a wood frame, sometimes a size that is no longer standard, with a threshold worn down to the oak. The 1990s-and-newer houses mostly have a steel builder door whose sill was set without a pan, and after twenty-odd winters the jamb feet and the subfloor behind the threshold have gone soft.

A new slab in a tired frame does not fix either one. We pull the whole unit, cut out what is rotten, rebuild the opening square, lay a sill pan and tape the sides and head before the new prehung door goes in. Odd-size openings in older houses are measured and the door ordered to fit, or the opening is framed down to a stock size if that makes more sense.

Colder winters here mean a door that seals at the weatherstrip and the threshold, not just one that looks good. We adjust the threshold and strike so the door closes tight against the seal, then foam, seal and trim with brickmould outside and casing inside. Paint or stain is its own line on the quote if you want us to do it; otherwise the door and trim are left primed and caulked.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • Your pick of steel or fiberglass, glass or solid, color and hardware finish
  • Which way the door swings and which side the handle is on
  • Photos of the door from outside and inside, and a close-up of the threshold
  • Your new lockset if you bought one, or we order one with the door

What JMB supplies

  • Measurement of the rough opening and wall thickness, and the door order
  • Removal and haul-away of the old door, frame and trim
  • Rot repair at the sill, jamb feet and subfloor, quoted from photos
  • Sill pan, flashing tape, low-expansion foam and sealant
  • New door set plumb and square, threshold and strike adjusted to seal
  • Brickmould or exterior trim outside and casing inside
  • Lockset and deadbolt installed
  • Photos of the finished door in your job folder

How it is priced: per door

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Steel vs. fiberglass, smooth or wood-grain, and the glass insert
  • Stock size vs. an odd-size opening in an older house
  • Sidelites or a transom, or a single door
  • Rot in the sill, jamb or subfloor once the old unit is out
  • Siding, brick or stucco around the opening and how the outside is trimmed
  • Painting or staining the door and trim, quoted as a separate line

Send the outside and inside of the door, a close-up of the threshold and the bottom of the jambs, and a tape across the opening if you can.

How long it takes

One single entry door in a sound opening: about half a day to most of a day. Rot repair or sidelites add time. The door is ordered after the quote is approved.

Entry Door Replacement in Cambridge, MN — Steel and Fiberglass: questions, answered

Steel or fiberglass for a front door in Cambridge, MN?

Both insulate well with a foam core. Steel costs less and dents if something hits it; fiberglass resists dents, does not rust at the bottom edge and can be stained to look like wood. On a sunny or exposed side of the house, fiberglass holds up to temperature swings better.

My older Cambridge house has an odd-size front door. Can you still replace it?

Yes. Older homes often have openings that do not match today's stock doors. We either order a door made to the opening or frame the opening down to a stock size and trim it so it does not show. We tell you which costs less on your house before you order.

Why is the floor soft in front of my entry door?

Water got under the threshold, usually because the door was set without a sill pan or the sealant at the bottom of the brickmould failed. Over years it rots the subfloor and the jamb feet. We cut out the soft wood and rebuild it before the new door goes in.

Does replacing a front door in Cambridge need a permit?

Many cities treat a same-size entry door swap as maintenance, but it depends on the city and the job. We check with the City of Cambridge building department and pull a permit when one is required, for example if the opening changes.

Will my house be open to the cold during the swap?

Only for a few hours. The old door comes out and the new one goes in the same day, and the opening is never left open overnight. On a cold day we keep the work moving so the door is closed up as soon as it is set.

Do you replace entry doors in Isanti and Princeton too?

Yes. We replace entry doors in Isanti, Princeton and the rest of the area around Cambridge from our base in Zimmerman. You can send photos for a reply within one business day or book a free in-home estimate.
