Ceilings get painted less than walls and show more when they are done badly. A ceiling catches light across its whole face, so every lap mark, every thin spot and every stain that was painted over instead of sealed shows up at four in the afternoon. Flat paint hides a lot; it does not hide a water stain, and it does not hide a roller that ran dry.
Most ceiling requests are one of three things: a stain from a leak that has since been fixed, a whole-house ceiling that has gone yellow or dingy, or a new surface after popcorn removal, a drywall patch or a skim coat that needs primer before it can take paint. Each one gets a different prep and the same finish: two coats of flat ceiling paint, rolled wet into wet, cut in clean at the wall line.
We paint ceilings on their own or with the walls. If the walls are staying, the ceiling gets cut in against them with a straight line; if the walls are getting painted too, the ceiling goes first so the wall color can cut in against it.

- Ceiling height: standard rooms work off a pole, vaulted and two-story ceilings need staging
- Textured vs. smooth: texture takes more paint and a longer nap, smooth shows more and takes more care
- Stains and their cause: a spot to seal vs. a ceiling that needs a full coat of stain-blocking primer
- New surface after popcorn removal, a patch or a skim coat, which needs a prime coat before color
- Fixtures, fans and vents to drop and reinstall vs. mask in place
- A color other than white, or a dark ceiling that takes a tinted primer and a third coat
- How many rooms on the same visit; the second room is always cheaper than the first
Send one photo of the ceiling from the doorway and a close-up of any stain or patch. Tell us the ceiling height if it is more than a normal room and whether the leak that made the stain is fixed.
How long it takes
One room, stain sealed and two coats: a day. Three or four standard rooms: two days. A vaulted living room or a whole-house ceiling job: two to four days depending on the staging.

Situations and options
Water stain on a sound ceiling
The leak is fixed and the drywall is dry and firm. The ring gets a stain-blocking primer, shellac or oil-based depending on the mark, then the whole ceiling gets two coats so the patch does not read as a patch. If the drywall is soft or sagging, that is a drywall repair first and we quote it.
After popcorn removal or a skim coat
Fresh joint compound is porous and shows every lap mark without primer. The ceiling gets a full coat of drywall primer, a light sand, then two coats of flat. This is the finish coat the drywall page hands off to.
Whole-house ceiling refresh
Ceilings that went yellow from age or smoke, or that were never painted after the builder's one coat. Every ceiling in the house gets the same white in two coats, smoke marks sealed first. Usually done room by room so you keep the use of the house.
Vaulted and two-story ceilings
Staging or a plank and ladders instead of a pole, more time cutting in at the angled wall line, and a plan for the fan or the chandelier. Priced per room with the height figured in.

Can you paint over a water stain on the ceiling?
Only after it is sealed. A water stain bleeds through ordinary paint, sometimes weeks later, so the mark gets a stain-blocking primer first: shellac-based for a heavy brown ring, oil or a bonding stain blocker for lighter marks. Then the whole ceiling gets two coats so there is no patch shape. The leak has to be fixed first or the stain comes back with the next rain.
What paint do you use on ceilings?
Flat ceiling paint, in a plain ceiling white unless you want a color. Flat hides small waves, joints and roller texture that a satin or eggshell would light up, and ceilings do not get scrubbed, so they do not need a washable sheen. On a kitchen or bathroom ceiling we use a flat made for moisture rooms so it does not spot. It goes on in two coats rolled while the edge is still wet.
Do you paint the ceiling before or after the walls?
Ceiling first. It is rolled a little onto the top of the wall, then the wall color is cut in against it with a straight line. Painting the ceiling last means cutting a white line against a colored wall, which is harder to keep clean. If only the ceiling is being painted, we cut in at the existing wall color and keep the line where it was.
Does a ceiling need primer after popcorn removal?
Yes. After the texture is scraped the ceiling is skimmed with joint compound, and bare compound soaks up paint unevenly and shows every roller lap. A full coat of drywall primer evens the surface out and lets the flat paint go on in two coats that look like one. Skipping it is the reason freshly scraped ceilings look blotchy.
Why does my ceiling have roller marks and can you fix them?
Lap marks come from rolling over paint that has already started to dry, a roller that ran dry, or a sheen on a surface that should be flat. The fix is a fresh coat done right: the ceiling rolled in one direction in overlapping wet strips, with enough paint on the roller, in flat. Heavy ridges get a light sand first. One or two coats usually erases them.
Can you paint a ceiling a color other than white?
Yes. A soft color a shade lighter than the walls warms a room, and a dark ceiling can work in a dining room or a bedroom with tall walls. Dark colors take a tinted primer and often a third coat to cover evenly, and they show roller texture more than white does, so we roll them with more care. Send a photo of the room and the color and we will say what it takes.
